FROM THE "FOOTYSTATS DIARY" — LAST TIME:
KANGAROOS v WEST COAST
l the Eagles posted a record 5th-straight victory over the Kangaroos ...
l ANDREW EMBLEY passed 150 goals in game 143 ...

THE MATCH:
One of the better games of the season was seen by less than a half filled Docklands Stadium on a rainy Sunday afternoon – the closed roof protected a bare 26,113 when the Kangaroos (2nd) were challenged by West Coast (5th). The Eagles for most of the match managed to retain the lead.

In a thrilling see-sawing contest where both faced being placed under pressure it was the Eagles that prevailed in a victory that places them in equal second place alongside Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and the Kangas.

Paul Gough reported the match for Sportal: The Eagles had to survive surges from the Roos late in the second term, early in the third term and midway through the last before recording their eighth win in their past nine matches against the Kangaroos since 2002.

And it was the Eagles' brilliant midfield – despite captain Chris Judd spending nearly the entire match on the forward line due to his on-going groin problems - that proved the difference.

Not only did Daniel Kerr produce another best afield performance with 34 possessions but he had plenty of support from the Eagles' young guns with Matt Priddis helping himself to 26 touches while Matt Rosa had 28 touches and kicked two goals.

Former skipper Ben Cousins' fantastic comeback continued as he had 24 touches while Dean Cox, after surprisingly starting the game on the bench, was eventually the dominant big man on the ground with 19 touches and 30 hit-outs as well a great goal in the final term.

The Kangas, however, were left to rue some missed opportunities to put even more pressure on the visitors in the final term.

After veteran Glenn Archer, who was easily the Roos' best player in his 305th match, ran into an open goal to put the Roos to within 11 points both Shannon Grant and Drew Petrie had chances to get their team within a kick but made a mess of straight-forward opportunities.

WEST COAST 17.17-119 (Embley 2, Hansen 2, Lynch 2, Priddis 2, Rosa 2) best, Kerr, Cousins, Rosa, KANGAROOS 15.12-102 (Sansbury 2, Petrie 2, Jones 2, McMahon 2) best, Archer, Sansbury, Simpson.
Sunday at Docklands: 26,113.

Report:
Quinten Lynch
(WCE) reported by umpire Michael Vozzo for charging Jesse W Smith (Kan) during Q2. The MRP reviewed the incident and withdrew the charge.
