THE MATCH
Hawthorn moved to their first preliminary final since 2001 when they were solid winners by 51 points over the Western Bulldogs in the Second Qualifying played in good but cool conditions on Friday night at the MCG to a top attendance of 76,703.

Lance Franklin kicked a match-winning 8.2 and was at times freakish and too skilful and too strong for anyone from the Bulldogs. Good as the Coleman medallist was at one end of the ground, Luke Hodge was almost as good at the other, chopping off attacks and setting up contests with his run and use of the ball.

Not far behind that pair were the trio of midfielders Brad Sewell, Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis who were at their ruthless best. But the fierce standard came at a cost and at stages during the final term, Hawthorn had no fit men on their bench.

Len Johnson observed in The Age: The Bulldogs had few effective players. Will Minson battled hard in the ruck, Daniel Cross got plenty of the ball, Nathan Eagleton worked hard, Daniel Giansiracusa was the most effective, or least ineffective, forward. But so many of their prime movers either stalled or were denied room to use the ball effectively. Robert Murphy and Scott Welsh were hardly sighted; Adam Cooney and Mitch Hahn were overwhelmed.

Hawthorn have a week to recuperate, whereas the Bulldogs must regroup quickly after far too many players were off their best and their run extends to six losses from the past eight games.

The Hawks simply steamrolled the 'Dogs.

HAWTHORN 18.19-127 (Franklin 8.2, Osborne 4, Roughead 3) best, Franklin, Hodge, Sewell,  WEST.B'DOGS 11.10-76 (Akermanis 3, Giansiracusa 2, Hill 2, Cooney 2) best, Cross, Boyd, Giansiracusa.
Friday night at MCG: 76,703.
