THE MATCH:
As expected, top-placed Geelong smashed the bottom side, Richmond, by 70 points on Saturday afternoon to a packed crowd of 21,951 at Kardinia Park. The result was never in doubt as the Cats kicked kicked the last three goals of the opening term to open a 20-point lead, from which point they were never troubled.

Lyall Johnson reported in The Age: Any number of passages showed the inevitable gulf between the pair. Geelong (who enjoyed their 13th straight win) moved the ball with deadly efficiency dozens of times as if the Richmond players were witches hats; at equally numerous times, the Tigers managed to hand over possession through poor decision-making and sub-standard skills.

But, to be fair, despite the 70-point win by the Cats – which would have been more than 80 had Nathan Brown not scored two junk-time goals in the last term – Geelong was probably only brilliant in patches while the Tigers did well at times to, at least for the first half, keep vaguely in touch.

Notwithstanding the margin and the 21 goals they scored, it was a long way from the demolition job the Cats performed on the Tigers in round six. But given the wind was slicing across the ground from wing to wing and the rain was making the ball and ground slippery, the result was pretty impressive.

Sam Lienert observed for the AFL webpage: The biggest cheers from the Cats' crowd were reserved for ruckman Mark Blake, who kicked two goals, one in each of the third and fourth quarters, after not having kicked a goal in his previous 28 matches.

But the match highlight was a spectacular mark by Geelong ruckman Steven King, who took a ride on the goal umpire to mark on the goal-line and prevent a shot from Richmond's Nathan Brown from scoring early in the final term.

Brendan Cohen summed up for Sportal: Geelong's midfielders Darren Milburn (33 possessions), Jimmy Bartel (32) and Joel Corey (32) gave their forwards plenty of opportunities, with Steve Johnson the main recipient as he bagged five goals. Matthew Scarlett's run and carry out of defence was again a highlight, as he put the ball inside 50 on seven occasions to continue his stellar season.

Only Nathan Foley (35 touches), Shane Tuck (27), Joel Bowden (30) and Matthew Richardson (18 possessions, four goals) could hold their heads high for the Tigers, while Daniel Connors, in just his second AFL match, showed glimpses of his potential with 25 disposals.

GEELONG 21.13-139 (S.Johnson 5.2, Stokes 3, Kelly 2, Mooney 2, Blake 2, Wojcinski 2) best, Milburn, Corey, G.Ablett, RICHMOND 11.3-69 (Richardson 4, Brown 3, Tivendale 2) best, Foley, Tuck, J.Bowden.
Saturday at Kardinia Park: 21,951.
