Notes:

l  Keith Slater (WA) claims Bob Shearman (SA) scored a point from the half-back line during the 1961 Carnival played in Brisbane. A similar feat, this time rolling through for a goal, was attributed to famous West Torrens player ‘Nip’ Geddes in the early 1900s for a SA State side in a match against Broken Hill.

l  During the Geelong v Melbourne VFL match at Kardinia Park on May 15 1965, both full backs, Paul Vinar (Geelong) and ‘Tassie’ Johnson (Melbourne) consistently drop kicked out to the centre circle, a distance of something close to 83 metres.

l  John Pitura (South Melbourne) v Geelong in the VFL match at Kardinia Park on April 28 1973, hit the goalpost halfway up with successive shots, both torpedo punts, from well inside the centre square, a minimum of 80 metres.

Other long kicks
(Exact distances not known)

l  approx. 77.72m (85 yards) – Joe Slater (Geelong VFL) v Richmond, goaled from the centre of Punt Road Oval (drop kick) on June 15 1912.

l  approx. 82.30m (90 yards) – Colin Tully (Collingwood VFL) v Richmond at the MCG on August 6 1966, scored from the centre of the MCG (drop kick).

l  approx. 77.72m (85 yards) – Ted Whitten (Footscray VFL) v Melbourne at the MCG on May 24 1958.

l  approx. 82.30m (90 yards) – Frank Golding (Sturt SANFL) from a place kick, kicked a goal from the centre of Fremantle Oval in the 1920 end-of-season game.

l  approx. 82.30m (90 yards) – J Campbell (South Fremantle WAFL) also scored a goal from a place kick from the centre of Fremantle Oval, but opponents and year are unrecorded.

l  approx. 81.88m (89 yards) – ‘Jaspar’ Jones (Williamstown VFA) v Carlton in the 1880s scored a behind with a drop kick from the wing of the East Melbourne CG.

l  Alan Scott (St Kilda VFL) scored a goal from the centre of the MCG on June 3 1929, a distance of approx. 82.30m (90 yards).

l  For Victoria v South Australia on the MCG in 1894, Bill Proudfoot (Collingwood VFA) twice reached the centre with kick-offs (place kick) – approx. 85 yards, 77.72m.

l  A punt kick by John Duckworth (Fitzroy VFL) was measured by TV commentator Bruce Andrew and claimed to be 85 metres (93 yards).

l  A goal after the siren by North Melbourne (VFL) forward Malcolm Blight v Carlton at Princes Park on June 5 1976 was estimated to have travelled between 63 and 74 metres (70-80 yards).

l  A punt kick by John McCarthy (North Melbourne VFL) v West Coast in 1988 was estimated at 85 metres, some 92 yards.

l Horsham (Victoria) forward John ‘Sambo’ Seater kicked a 115 metres (some 125.76m) v Warracknabeal in the early 1960s, the ball being swept along by a gale and bouncing twice before going through the sticks.
