Brownlow 2009 – votes by club; by round

Gary Ablett is first number 29 to win the Brownlow.

In receiving votes in 13 games (his ratio of 3-2-1 was 8-1-4),  Ablett has joined an exclusive group ...

Most votes in Most games in a season
14 Des Fothergill (Col) 1940 (32)
14 J. Herbie Matthews (SM) 1940 (32)
14 Robert Harvey (StK) 1998 (32)

13 Alistair Lord (Gee) 1962 (28)
13 Chris Judd (WCE) 2004 (30)
13 Gary Ablett (Gee) 2009 (30)

It's interesting to note that when Robert Harvey received 32 in 1998, the nearest Saint was Peter Everitt with 9 votes.
In this count 6 Saints reached double figures.

This year a total of 201 players were awarded votes – 7 fewer than last year.
There were 23 ineligible players given votes from 14 clubs (compared to 22 players from 13 clubs last year) –

For the second year in a row, Hawthorn had the most number of ineligible players with 3 (Mitchell, Franklin and Bateman).  Collingwood and Essendon also had 3 ineligible players.
* Sam Mitchell received the most number of votes for an ineligible player - 13

Western Bulldogs had the most number of players with votes (17).  North Melbourne had the least players (9)

The winning sides received 904 of the 1056 votes (up from 893 last year)
The losing sides received 140 of the 1056 votes (down from 151 last year)
For the second year in a row there were 2 draws.

St Kilda's previous best count was in 1971 when 17 players polled and received a total of 91 votes.
This time 14 Saints received 110 votes. The third highest behind Essendon 116 (2000) and Geelong 112 (2008)

St Kilda received all 6 votes in 13 of their 20 wins.  They received votes in every game and were the only team to do so. Geelong missed out on votes in Round 15.

North Melbourne and Richmond polled all 6 votes just once each.

Reigning premier Hawthorn failed to poll in 9 matches.  Only Melbourne faired worse – failing to poll in 11 matches.

8 players received 3 votes in a losing side.
Matthew Richardson (Rch) – Rnd 2 and Rnd 4
Chris Judd (Car) – Rnd 3
Adam Goodes (Syd) – Rnd 7

Observations on season 2009
The Full Picture update after Round 22

This is the first time in 25 years that the trio of Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon have all featured in the finals together.

In 1984, The top five was Essendon, Hawthorn, Carlton, Collingwood and Fitzroy (and St Kilda won the wooden spoon)

The last time all 3 missed the finals was in 1997 when Collingwood were 10th, Carton 11th and Essendon 14th – that year, the top 3 sides at the end of the home and away were St Kilda, Geelong and Western Bulldogs (the same order they are now!).  Adelaide won the premiership from 4th after defeating West Coast, Geelong, Western Bulldogs and St Kilda in turn – the first side to win the premiership after winning four finals.  Could they do it again?  They are currently the in-form team going into the finals.

The following is pending any corrections to the attendance figures for the final round.

The AFL will need a boost in their finals attendances after recording the lowest home and away figures in 3 years. (2007:  6,475,521 – 2008: 6,511,885 – 2009: 6,369,612)

This is despite Carlton recording  their best ever attendances in away matches with 573,582 bettering their previous best of 536,017 in 2008.

North Melbourne recorded their worst away attendance total (of 287,936) for 16 years when 240,183 attended their away matches in 1993.

Just what is happening with the Port?

Port Adelaide have recorded their second worst home attendance since joining the competition - and 34% down from their high in 2007 (just 2 years ago) -

Port Adelaide home attendances
2002   343,356
2009   357,471
2001   367,181
2006   383,927
1997   389,203
2004   406,570 (premiership year)
2000   409,064
1999   416,173
2008   421,974
2003   423,143
1998   442,834
2005   445,699
2007   545,094

Port Adelaide's best home attendance at Football Park (sans Adelaide) was in Round 1 when just 28,315 saw them defeat Essendon.
This was lower than Adelaide's worst attendance at Football Park of 30,173 when North Melbourne visited in Round 12 and managed to kick just 3.6-24

Here are some more observations I have noted.

All the top eight sides scored more than 2000, and all the bottom sides less than 2000

Despite having 2 goalkickers with 50 goals, Brisbane are the only finalist who did not kick 300 goals in the home and away

The scoring accuracy (percentage of scoring shots that were goals) for each team ranged between 51 and 57%  - the last time all teams kicked more goals than behinds was in 2005 (when Essendon, Hawthorn, Collingwood and Carlton occupied the bottom three places and Adelaide won the minor premiership after winning their last 10 games.

Geelong were the only team which did not lose to a bottom eight side (thanks to St Kilda's loss to North) - winning all 12 matches.

Melbourne were the only team which did not defeat a top eight side losing all 11.

Brisbane's final against Carlton will be their 9th consecutive match at night.
 – Carlton's last 3 matches in Qld have been single digit results..... losing to Freo and defeating Brisbane twice by a goal

Bruce and Michael noted the interesting statistic from the Collingwood v Western Bulldogs game were both had the same tally of behind at the end of each quarter. I noticed that 2 of the 4 quarters in the game were drawn (both scored 3.3 in the 1st and 4.5 in the 3rd quarters)

The following is a list of matches I have where at least 2 quarters have been drawn..

The Full Picture update after Round 19

After defeating the Hawks last weekend, St Kilda have won their last 22 home and away matches – scoring 332.278-2270 (av 103.18 per game) and conceding a miserly 190.185-1325 (av 60.23 per game) – with an impressive percentage of 171.321. Geelong are next closest having lost 3 games and conceded 269.191-1805 (av 82.05 per game).

In 1929 Collingwood won all 18 home and away matches by an average of 44.5 points (scoring an average of 106.5 pts per game and conceding just 1117 points – 62.05 per game.

Despite winning all their home and away matches, Collingwood were thrashed by 3rd placed Richmond by 62 points in the Semi-Final – Rch 18.15-123 d Col 8.13-61. Richmond then went on to defeat Carlton in the final, however, under the "Argus system" at the time Collingwood had the right to challenge the premiership as minor premiers, even though it lost the semi-final.

The same system saw Geelong challenge Collingwood in 1925 to record their first premiership since 1886 in the VFA, and Collingwood challenged Geelong in 1930 despite losing the preliminary final – and take out its fourth premiership in a row. This controversial Argus system was replaced in 1931 by the McIntyre Final four when Geelong ended Collingwood's domination.

St Kilda also have a 3 game buffer over Geelong on the 30 Match ladder largely due to their impressive away record. They have just one loss against all opponents – against Brisbane at the Gabba (2008-R9-BCG - Bri 21.15-141 v StK 14.11-95) – we will have to wait on next season's fixture to see if this pairing occurs.
St Kilda's 2 home losses were against North Melbourne (2007-R11-Dok StK 8.10-58 v NM 11.14-80) and Collingwood (2008-R8-Dok(n) StK 14.10-94 v Col 16.7-103)
The Saints are at home to North next weekend (in Round 21) on Sunday August 23 - but will have to wait until next season to see if they are paired against Collingwood.

On current form, St Kilda's biggest threats may come from Collingwood, Western Bulldogs, and Brisbane.

North Melbourne have completed their 11 home matches having won just 4 with a percentage of 86.4 – the attendance of 306,987 at 27,907.9 per game is the second lowest ahead of Port Adelaide. Their last 3 games are away to West Coast, St Kilda and Port Adelaide. In their 8 away games so far North have just one win and a draw.

Richmond are the only side who have not beaten a opponent currently in the top 8 – this weekend's game against Collingwood will be their last chance to break this drought.

Hawthorn lost every quarter against St Kilda - the first time they have lost all 4 quarters this season and their quarter percentages are all below 100 – (90.8, 99.8, 97.1, 79.4).

This leaves Essendon as the only team (except for St Kilda) who have not lost every quarter in a game this season.

Even though North Melbourne won every quarter for the first time this season - they have still lost twice as many as they have won. (24-48-4).

Sydney are the only team which have not drawn a quarter.

Despite their poor season the Hawks have the 4th highest attendance total.

Carlton require just 7251 more to reach the million attendance milestone.

Essendon require 61,877 more – however it is unlikely that this number will cram into the Docklands on Sunday to see St Kilda equal Essendon's 20 game record winning streak to start a season.

The Full Picture update after Round 18

MWB has run his keen eye across the wider results from the matches of the 18th round.

Adelaide have won their last 7 final quarters at Football Park. The 2 point loss against Geelong was their first single digit result since Round 1.

Brisbane have won their last 8 quarters at the Gabba – and have lost just one of their last 13 at the same ground – against Melbourne in Round 13. Of their last 7 matches 5 have resulted in margins in the forties ... 42, 48, 43, 41 and 40 points.

Carlton have won all 6 final quarters at the Docklands this season

Collingwood require just 21,850 to attend at Football Park in Adelaide to break through the 1 million attendance mark in Round 19.

Such is ninth! Essendon is ranked ninth on the home ladder, ninth on the away ladder and ninth on the actual ladder.

Fremantle have won their last 5 opening quarters at Subiaco since they were beaten by Hawthorn in Round 8. They have not won a final quarter away from Subiaco this season

After winning 14 consecutive quarters at Kardinia Park (R2-R13) Geelong have lost 2 quarters in each of their last 3 matches there – including the final quarters

Hawthorn have won just 2 of 9 matches against teams currently in the top eight – including both matches against Port Adelaide. Geelong and Port Adelaide are the only two teams to have beaten Hawthorn twice this season.

Melbourne face their best chance of climbing off the bottom with matches against North Melbourne and Fremantle in the next two rounds.

North Melbourne have not won an opening quarter since Round 11 – against St Kilda
North Melbourne is the only club to have conceded 1000 points in their home matches.

Based solely on ladder position, Port Adelaide have the best run home behind the Saints.
Port have lost just two games this season at Football Park – against St Kilda and as the away side against Adelaide.
Port have won just 1 of their 8 games outside Adelaide – against Hawthorn
Port's last 6 matches have results of LWLWLW.

Richmond have lost their last 8 third quarters, and have won 2 and drawn 1 of their last 3 games – it is quite possible that they could also win 3 of their last 4 matches – so much for tanking!

St Kilda have lost just 3 opening quarters this season – against Sydney (R1), North Melbourne (R11) and Richmond (R14) – all outside the eight. After winning all 4 quarters in 5 of their first 10 matches, they have not repeated the feat in the 8 matches since.

Sydney have come closest to the Saints than any other club this season - and have lost both games by a combined margin of just 16 points.

Against the top eight sides, the Bulldogs have won just 2 of 7 games and are likely to finish 3rd on the strength of winning 10 of their 11 games against teams in the bottom eight – only loss was against West Coast in Round 4 at Subiaco – the same team they face this weekend. They face a very tough run home with matches against Brisbane, Geelong and Collingwood to round out their home and away season

Against Essendon, West Coast won their first opening quarter since Round 9 against Collingwood. Their last opening quarter win away from home was against Hawthorn in Round 5 at York Park.

Same round – 1, 2, 4 point margins

It struck MWB as unusual, and a search of his database proved he was right.

Across the 13,536 League matches since 1897 there are only three occasions that matches have finished with 1, 2 and 4 point margins in the same round —

Sydney – are they St Kilda's achilles heel?

The undefeated Saints face a Swans team on the decline and out of the finals for the first time since Paul Roos took over the reins.

For the Saints to remain undefeated they will have to overcome history.  Here are some examples where the Swans ended a Saints winning streak – and run into the finals .

In 1907, St Kilda won the first 6 games of the season.

In Round 7 they played South Melbourne at the Junction oval and lost 4.8-32 to 7.2-44  before falling away –

2007-R6 Ladder    Final ladder

Gee 6  8  73.9   Ess 17 20  74.0
Interesting how both these ladders are also in percentage order.

In 1959 St Kilda won 4 in a row from Round 3 to Round 7. They were 4th and two games ahead of South Melbourne in 7th.
In Round 8 at the Lake Oval South Melbourne 16.13-109 won 7.11-53 –
The were still 4th in Round 13 with 8 wins and their percentage was exactly 100.0.  They lost 4 of the last 5 games to finish 8th.

the Saints fell from 3rd to finish 10th – one game behind Sydney who finished 8th and in the finals.

They visited the SCG in Round 11 and lost to Sydney 11.10-76 to 17.10-112.  After topping the ladder ahead of Melbourne by 3 games, the Saints were reeled in by Brisbane, Port Adelaide and Melbourne by Round 17 before finishing 3rd behind Port Adelaide.

A goal in mind ... Carlton's goal a quarter versus Collingwood

One could be excused for thinking that the Blues went out each quarter with a goal in mind in the R17 match against Collingwood at the MCG – they succeeded.

This is the 40th time that a club have scored exactly one goal in each and every quarter.

The last time was two years ago against West Coast at Subiaco, and no prizes for guessing the team – Carlton!  The goalscorers on that day were Brendan Fevola, Brad Fisher, Matthew Lappin and Heath Scotland – all with singles.

The only time before that by Carlton was also against Collingwood, in 1911 at Victoria Park when they recorded almost identical scoreline ...
1911-R17-VP  - Car 1.5, 2.10, 3.12, 4.17
2007-R4-S    - Car 1.2, 2.6,  3.11, 4.15
2009-R19-MCG - Car 1.5, 2.9,  3.13, 4.16

The team kicking one goal in each quarter has won 5 times - the most recent was by Collingwood in Round 14, 1951 at Kardinia Park when they rolled the Cats by 2 points – the same margin Richmond beat Geelong in a similar match in 1909

The result of the game in 1901 is rather interesting – Collingwood had a "goal" in mind and Melbourne made "point" of it.

The Full Picture update after Round 16
Ladder Prognostications

This presentation embraces the normal ladders which result after each round plus the first of the Ladder Prognostications of the season –

48 matches – 281.4 trillion win/loss outcomes and 79.7 sextillion possibilities.

With their opponents having an average ladder position of 6.67, Hawthorn have the worst run-home of all sides.

St Kilda and Geelong are the only sides who have qualified for the finals, mathematically.

If the Saints winning streak extends against the Bulldogs, then they will secure a top 2 position. Even if the Bulldogs defeat the Saints, they could still fall as low as 11th.

The top 6 teams (StK, Gee, WB, Col, Bri and Ade) can finish top.

9 teams can finish on the bottom. That will reduce if Essendon, Port Adelaide or Hawthorn can secure victories.

The reigning premier, Hawthorn, can still finish as high as second, and can reach the top 4 in as soon as 3 weeks.

Every team still has a mathematical chance of reaching the finals. Losses to Richmond, Melbourne or Fremantle will snuff out that chance.
