TIGERS START WITH SIX NIGHT GAMES IN 2006
Regular Diary reader Rhett Bartlett asks if the the six night matches by Richmond to start the 2006 season is a record ... our stats whiz Martin Windsor-Black notes this equals the six played by the Tigers in 2002 and 2003.

The record for successive night matches is EIGHT, already held in Brisbane, which will will again be equalled by the Lions and St Kilda in the new season.

MWB delivers the complete status of premiership matches played at night:

THE RECORD IS EIGHT....

u Richmond will start the 2006 season with 6 consecutive night matches.

u Essendon will conclude the 2006 H & A season with 6 consecutive night matches and equal their club record of 2002 and 2003.

u In Round 4 St.Kilda will equal Brisbane's 1998/1999 record of 8 consecutive night matches, St.Kilda's streak started in Round 21 and continued into the finals.

u Also in Round 4 against Hawthorn, Carlton will beat their club record of 3 consecutive night matches in 1999, 2002 and 2003.

u Carlton's streak will extend to 5 the following week against Richmond.

u Brisbane will also equal the record of 8 consecutive night matches between Rounds 10 and 17.

u Fitzroy played 24 night matches – none consecutively.

u Essendon had 6 consecutive H & A Night Matches from 2001-R20 to 2002-R4.

u If the 1998 Grand Final has been a night match, North Melbourne Kangaroos would have played 12 night matches in succession. As it was they played 11 night matches out of 12.

u Compare that ratio with their 19 matches between Round 16 2005 and Round 11 2006, NM Kangaroos will play just 1 night match - in Round 1 at Port Adelaide.

u Geelong will equal a club record in Round 8 with their 4th consecutive night match.

u Sydney will equal their club record of 4 consecutive night matches in Round 18.

u Interestingly, Geelong do not play a single night match in the second half of the 2006 season – the last time they played 11 consecutive matches without a night match was in the opening 11 rounds of 2003.

u For the league record, Collingwood played 1748 matches before their first Night Match. in 1985-R1 against North Melbourne. They played just 2 Night matches in their next 153 matches.

Back to the Diary

From FootyWorks - In Round 20, Geelong's rose by 1 position after their 1 point loss to Melbourne – the first such rise in August since West Coast rose one place after losing by 51 points at Princes Park in Round 18, 2002

- And how identical was it to the match between University and Melbourne at the MCG in 1909.  The Students lost to the Redlegs by a point and climbed from 7th to 6th.

In 109 seasons of VFL-AFL football, this has occurred only ONCE before, where 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th places have been held with a percentage of less than 100%.

In 1997-Round 5, Fremantle, Western Bulldogs, Geelong and Port Adelaide were in the top 8, with a percentage of less than 100.

Interestingly, West Coast at that time were also on top with just one loss, Port Adelaide were 8th and Brisbane were 10th.

The record for most teams outside the positions of the system of the time – the 4, 5, 6 or top 8 – with a percentage of at least 100% is FIVE on FIVE occasions – 1946-R16, 1959-R13, 1993-R6, 1993-R8 and 1993-R9 – the 1946 and 1959 ladders are interesting where only three clubs had a percentage of less than 100 ...

SECOND-LAST BEATS 2nd

Collingwood, the bottom side, did the unthinkable by beating top-of-the ladder West Coast at the MCG in Round 9 on May 21st.

For the second time in three weeks, the second-bottom side has defeated the second-top side, when Collingwood (15th) beat Geelong (2nd) in the Friday night match of Round 11 at Docklands Stadium.

This was the 170th meeting between second and second last (position in brackets).

Two meetings were drawn..

Going into Round 5, Hawthorn were 15th and Kangaroos were 2nd. The Kangaroos won by 19 points.

Its worth noting the 1971 clash where Geelong were second bottom and defeated Collingwood, and the 1900 meeting where Collingwood defeated Geelong.

JUNE – WILL IT BUST OUT ALL OVER?

It's June and it does not only mean the start of Winter.

The Tigers could be in for a bleak month given their recent June record.

Most of us may recall Collingwood's run of 14 consecutive losses between 1996-R10 and 1999-R12.

RICHMOND's JUNE LOSING STREAK
Richmond have not won in June since 23rd June 2001 when they defeated Sydney at the Docklands 12.14-86 to 8.12-60 (at the same time Hawthorn defeated Kangaroos by 3 points at the MCG).

Richmond have lost their last 10 matches in June –
Sat  1st Jun 2002-R10-MCG    14.14-98 v WB  17.15-117
Fri  7th Jun 2002-R11-Dok(n) 11.18-84 v Kan  14.11-95
Sun 23rd Jun 2002-R12-FP     10.10-70 v PA  23.16-154
Sat 29th Jun 2002-R13-MCG     7.12-54 v Gee  14.12-96
Fri  6th Jun 2003-R11-Dok(n) 13.11-89 v Kan  13.14-92
Sat 14th Jun 2003-R12-MCG    12.14-86 v Car   14.9-93
Sat 28th Jun 2003-R13-BCG(n)   9.7-61 v Bri 15.14-104
Sat  5th Jun 2004-R11-Dok(n)  12.8-80 v Kan 24.10-154
Sun 13th Jun 2004-R12-MCG    10.11-71 v Fre   12.9-81
Sat 19th Jun 2004-R13-Dok(n)  14-9-93 v Car 18.16-124

Richmond will face West Coast, Kangaroos and Adelaide in the next 3 weeks.

They have a fair way to go before they give the June record a shake –

Most consecutive losses in June –
26 - North Melbourne 1925-R8 to 1931-R8
25 - St.Kilda 1897-R5 to 1902-R9
21 - University 1911-R6 to 1914-R11
19 - St.Kilda 1952-R9 to 1957-R9
18 - North Melbourne 1968-R8 to 1972-R12
17 - St.Kilda 1908-R10 to 1912-R7
     South Melbourne/Sydney 1978-R11 to 1982-R12
16 - Geelong - 1941-R6 to 1946-R9
14 - Collingwood - 1996-R10 to 1999-R12
12 - Hawthorn - 1926-R8 to 1929-R6 & 1943-R8 to 1946-R8
11 - St.Kilda - 1930-R8 to 1933-R8
     North Melbourne - 1933-R9 to 1936-R6
     South Melbourne - 1960-R8 to 1962-R10
     St.Kilda - 1978-R10 to 1980-R13
     St.Kilda - 1982-R11 to 1984-R12

If Richmond's losing streak continues then West Coast will extend another record – 11 consecutive matches with different outcomes in Round 11.

Geelong have the same record for Round 12.

In 1967-R8 and 1987-R7, the opponents in all of the 6 matches were 1 or 2 places apart ...

<||> QUARTERS LADDER

An addition to the quarters ladder this week is the number of 4-quarter matches each team has won or lost this season.

In the 48 matches so far this year, there have been just 8 matches where the winner has won all 4 quarters ... in Round 2 and Round 6 there was not a single 4-quarter result.

<> The reigning premiers, Port Adelaide have not only won the least number of quarters, but they are the only club which have not yet won a final quarter.

<> The Bulldogs have lost all their 6 opening quarters whilst Adelaide have won all theirs.

<> One of the main reasons WEST COAST are on top of the regular ladder is that they have not lost a single quarter after half time for the whole season.

In the 109 seasons since 1897, this has only ever happening once before.  In 1952, Collingwood did not lose a quarter after half time until Round 7 against Melbourne.

For the record in the opening 6 rounds of 1952, Collingwood lost just 3 of 24 quarters : 2nd quarter v Essendon (R3), 2nd quarter v St.Kilda (R4) and 1st quarter v Footscray (R6).

In Round 7, Collingwood lost the opening quarter to Melbourne, won the second and lost both the 3rd and 4th.

The following shows how the 1952 Magpies compare to the 2005 Eagles after half time in the opening 6 rounds...

COLLINGWOOD Rounds 1 - 6, 1952

Brisbane are in 11th place for the first time since Round 14, 2000.

Sydney are in 12th place for the 150th time and the first time since Round 4, 2003.

In joining Hawthorn, Essendon and Brisbane as teams who have been on the bottom this season, Collingwood have been on the bottom 60 times – 1 more than their arch-rivals Carlton.

<||> Home and Away Ladders

Geelong, West Coast and Kangaroos are undefeated at home whilst Collingwood are yet to win a home match.

West Coast are the only club not to have lost away whilst Carlton, Hawthorn, Essendon and Port Adelaide are yet to record an away win.  Port Adelaide has the lowest away percentage.

Interesting that four non-Victorian clubs are amongst the five least attended clubs – they include both Grand Finallists, also Sydney and Fremantle.

Fremantle have pulled a total of just 58,670 people to their 3 away games – a stark contrast to the current bottom team Collingwood who have  drawn an *average* of 61,608 to their 3 away games – ironically they both meet this weekend at Subiaco.

Wooden spooners defeat premiers
Bottom wins, three straight weeks

By defeating Port Adelaide, Richmond can be added to the ever growing list of clubs which have finished on the bottom one year and defeated the reigning premiers the next.

Even rarer, in 1904, 1922, 1977, 1981 and 1999, the wooden spooners defeated the reigning premiers not once, but twice.

Bottom side wins - THREE consecutive weeks
For the last three rounds, the bottom team has risen from the canvass and recorded a victory.

R4-MCG    - Hawthorn (16th) 18.17-115 d Brisbane (8th) 10.9-69
R5-MCG    - Essendon (16th) 11.17-83 d Collingwood (11th) 10.9-69
R6-Dok(n) - Brisbane (16th) 21.10-136 d Essendon (11th) 12.16-88

In the last two rounds not only has the 16th team defeated the 11th team but in a bizarre coincidence has also risen to 11th in the ladder after the win.

Will this streak continue into next week with Collingwood (16th) taking on Fremantle (8th) at Subiaco?

The record streak is 6 consecutive rounds recorded in 1973, between Rounds 14 and 19, when the team on the bottom was victorious.  South Melbourne and Geelong shared the spoils in those rounds.

Martin Windsor-Black
From last to first

Yesterday in the Diary I focused on teams which had gone from a Grand Final to last the following season.

Given that Brisbane are currently on the bottom, I was asked if a team had ever won a premiership after being on the bottom of the ladder.  I knew about Fitzroy in 1916, and decided to look and see if there have been any more.

My findings ...

No team has won the premiership from the bottom for 60 years, and no team has won from second bottom for 30 years,

This season only Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Hawthorn and Essendon have been in the bottom two, so all will have their work cut out for them

Only the Kangaroos in 1999 have won from as low as 14th.

Hawthorn are yet to win a quarter as the Swans recorded their 9th 4-quarter win against the Hawks ... the second since 1966

Pre-season, practice match form
How does 2005 compare with 2004?

Will this be a guide on how the teams will fare in the main season?

Looking at last years results 13 of the 16 clubs finished within 5 places of their pre-season ranking and 9 within 3 places.

Four clubs finished in the same position.

Port Adelaide rose from 10th to win the premiership, and both Sydney and Essendon climbed 6 places.  Kangaroos, Carlton and Adelaide were the teams which fell out of the top 8.

Interesting how the top 10 teams had a 100+ percentage, whilst this year only 6 teams have a 100+ percentage.

I was also intrigued how the biggest margin in the practice matches on the weekend was just 14 points yet both the Wizard Cup semis were blowouts.  It was also the first time a semi final has blown out to 50pts plus since 1992.

One has to go back to 1991 to find the last and only time both semis had margins of greater than 50 points –

Wed Mar 6,1991 - Semi-Final - P - Haw 22.17-149 d Ess 6.11-47 - 102pts
Sat Mar 9,1991 - Semi-Final - P - NM 15.13-103 d Ade 6.9-45 - 58pts

The following weekend's grand final was also a blowout – and was also the game in which Dermott Brereton suffered the hip injury which virtually ended his career.

Sat Mar 16,1991 - GRAND FINAL - P - Haw 14.19-103 d NM 7.12-54 - 49pts

I believe that Richmond's quarter time score was 1.3.0.4-31  (The Tiger's 9-pointers were scored by Brown (1st qtr), Tambling (2nd qtr), Roach & Knobel (3rd qtr) and Tuck (4th qtr).

From the AFL website :
COLLINGWOOD: 1.1.4, 1.5.10, 1.8.11, 3.12.16 (115)
RICHMOND: 1.3.4, 2.3.6, 4.6.6, 5.9.9 (108)

EIGHT 9-pointers in a game beat the previous record of SIX 9 pointers which occurred 3 times: 2003-1R-KP Gee 4 v WB 2, 2003-SF-Dok Gee 1 v Col 5, 2004-1R-Man Kan 2 v Mel 4.

West Coast's 3-quarter time score was 0.11.0.5-71

FREMANTLE: 0.3.2, 0.6.3, 0.7.4, 0.11.7 (73)

In the 38 pre-season matches since the introduction of the 9-pointer, there has been just 4 matches with NO 9-pointers..  2 of these occurred on the weekend..

MARTIN WINDSOR-BLACK
Its now the month of February – so it can only mean one thing ...

FOOTY IS BACK!
Even if it is just the pre-season competition.

* The total score includes 47 nine-point Supergoals, 4020 six-pt goals, 12 three-pt *rushed* behinds and 3795 behinds.

** According to *Footy Works* and the *Footystats* archive page
http://footystats.freeservers.com/Archive/Wizard02.html

The quarter by quarter scores for the Demons in the St.Kilda v Melbourne
game in Round 1, 2002, are
MEL 2.2-14,  3.6-24, 4.10-34, 5.12-42
In my own spreadsheet I have Melbourne's quarter by quarter scores as 2.2,
3.5, 4.9, 5.11-41.
This is corroborated in AFL 2003 and also Inside Football. According to the Champion Data stats in the Feb 20 edition of Inside Football (I still have a copy), the 11 behinds were scored by Leoncelli(2), Bruce(2), Neitz(2), Woewodin(1), Robertson(1), and rushed(3)

This would make the final margin 68, not 67.

I have used the 5.11-41 score in the above table
