TIGERS START WITH SIX NIGHT GAMES IN 2006
Regular Diary reader Rhett Bartlett asks if the the six night matches by Richmond to start the 2006 season is a record ... our stats whiz Martin Windsor-Black notes this equals the six played by the Tigers in 2002 and 2003.

The record for successive night matches is EIGHT, already held in Brisbane, which will will again be equalled by the Lions and St Kilda in the new season.

MWB delivers the complete status of premiership matches played at night:

THE RECORD IS EIGHT....

u Richmond will start the 2006 season with 6 consecutive night matches.

u Essendon will conclude the 2006 H & A season with 6 consecutive night matches and equal their club record of 2002 and 2003.

u In Round 4 St.Kilda will equal Brisbane's 1998/1999 record of 8 consecutive night matches, St.Kilda's streak started in Round 21 and continued into the finals.

u Also in Round 4 against Hawthorn, Carlton will beat their club record of 3 consecutive night matches in 1999, 2002 and 2003.

u Carlton's streak will extend to 5 the following week against Richmond.

u Brisbane will also equal the record of 8 consecutive night matches between Rounds 10 and 17.

u Fitzroy played 24 night matches – none consecutively.

u Essendon had 6 consecutive H & A Night Matches from 2001-R20 to 2002-R4.

u If the 1998 Grand Final has been a night match, North Melbourne Kangaroos would have played 12 night matches in succession. As it was they played 11 night matches out of 12.

u Compare that ratio with their 19 matches between Round 16 2005 and Round 11 2006, NM Kangaroos will play just 1 night match - in Round 1 at Port Adelaide.

u Geelong will equal a club record in Round 8 with their 4th consecutive night match.

u Sydney will equal their club record of 4 consecutive night matches in Round 18.

u Interestingly, Geelong do not play a single night match in the second half of the 2006 season – the last time they played 11 consecutive matches without a night match was in the opening 11 rounds of 2003.

u For the league record, Collingwood played 1748 matches before their first Night Match. in 1985-R1 against North Melbourne. They played just 2 Night matches in their next 153 matches.

l St.Kilda polled in 21 of the 22 rounds – failing to get a single vote in their Round 9 loss to Adelaide.

l Richmond's Best & Fairest Joel Bowden did not poll a single vote.

l Cousins is the first #9 winner not to play for Hawthorn (following Austen, Dipper & Crawford).

l Fremantle's 69 votes from 12 players is also a club record beating their 66 votes in 2003 from 12 players and 61 votes last year also from 12 players.
