2004 National Draft
Curiosities of the draft


I would have to think that the strangest pick in the draft was Richmond's pick at number 65 – Mark Graham. Surely when a player retires, that should be it.  Then again other players have come back after retiring.. eg Tony Lockett and Gary Abett just to name two.

Anyway, I have noticed something different from Saturday's draft which does not happen very often.


Q: Which player was drafted for the third time, by the same club – just the third player in draft history (since 1986)?


A: Heath James - Sydney


Pick #1: In the 1998 National Draft, Heath James was picked up by the Swans at pick number 28 under the father-son rule (his father Max played 54 games for the Swans) from SANFL club Port Adelaide.

Heath played 4 games in 1999 and then 1 games in 2001 before being delisted at the end of 2002.

Pick #2:: Sydney re-selected Heath by placing him on the Rookie list for 2003, and was fortunate enough to be elevated to the senior ranks where he played 2 matches in 2003 and 11 matches in 2004 before being de-listed again.

Pick #3:  On Saturday, Sydney gave Heath a third chance with their 4th round draft pick at number 61.

Most people are lucky to get just one chance.  Sydney must have great faith in giving Heath his third chance ...

Q: Name the other two players who have been drafted 3 times by the same club?


A: Matthew Febey (Mel) and Mark McQueen (Rch)


Mark McQueen was drafted at pick number 42 in the 1990 National Draft from Tasmanian club North Hobart.  He played 5 clubs before being delisted.

He was picked up again in the 1992 Pre-Season draft at pick number 3.  He then proceeded to play 18 matches in 1992, 8 in 1993 and 3 in 1994.

And then at pick number 23 in the 1995 pre-season draft, he was picked up from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens, but never played a senior game.

In his 34 games between 1991 and 1994, he kicked 14 goals without a behind (including 4 against Hawthorn in 2 matches).

In the 1986 National draft, Melbourne selected both Febey twins from Devonport in Tasmania - Steven at number 3, Matthew at number 16.  Although Steven did not break into the senior side until 1988 for the first of his 258 games until 2001,  It was much harder for Matthew to break into the senior squad.  After being drafted in 1986, he was delisted, and re-drafted in the 1989 pre-season draft at pick number 55.  It was not until the rare mid-season draft in 1992, that Matthew was drafted again at pick number 17 from VCFL club Rochester.  He played 10 senior matches in 1992, the first of a total 143 games before his retirement in 2000.

Finally, how do you pronounce the surname of player number 55
i.e . Collingwood's Adam IACOBUCCI

The only other players I have found whose surname begin and end in 'I' are Len and Matthew J INCIGNERI. (also 9 letters) – both almost 90 years ago

2005 Draw – the best and the worst
Who has the upper hand?


As we all know the draw is unequal and always will be for as long as each team does not play each other twice.

To find out which club has the upper hand I have worked out each teams actual draw compared to what their best or worst draw could have been – by ladder position at the end of the 2004 finals and by match ratio (wins /matches played).

For example, in 2004 Adelaide finished in 12th place and with a match ratio of 36.4%.

The best draw Adelaide could have received for 2005 would have been to play each team in the bottom eight twice ...

Adding up the positions of these  teams  1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 13 + 14 + 15 + 16 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 13 + 14 + 15 + 16 = 212

Adding up the respective match ratios brings: 80.0 + 72.0 + 68.0 + 64.0 + 60.9 + 58.3 + 56.5 + 54.2 + 50.0 + 45.5 + 45.5 + 36.4 + 22.7 + 18.2 + 18.2 + 50.0 + 45.5 + 45.5 + 36.4 + 22.7 + 18.2 + 18.2 = 986.6%

Conversely, the worst draw Adelaide could have received would have been to play the top 7 teams twice ...

Adding up the positions of these teams: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 13 + 14 + 15 + 16 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 152

Positional Rating = (182 - 152) / (212 - 152) = 30 / 60 = 50.0%
MR Rating = (1110.5% - 1210.0%) / (986.6% - 1210.0%) = -99.5 / -223.4 = 44.5%

Consecutive wooden spoons

Following on from LUKE TUNNECLIFFE's  discovery of Nathan Brown's consecutive wooden spoons ...

A thorough search of The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers (took a little while!), has identified the following players who have been involved with consecutive wooden spoon sides with different clubs.

Also included are those players whose consecutive seasons are not necessarily in consecutive years. These are indicated by a * next to the player.

* Jack Todd played just 1 game for St.Kilda in 1898 and did not play until
his 7 matches for South Melbourne in 1903.
* Charles Mackay played 12 games for Melbourne in 1905 and 1906 and 7 games for University in 1911.
* Leo Little played 34 games for University in 1912 and 1913 before taking up a position with the Home Affairs Department in Canberra. After the war, he returned to play 12 games for Melbourne in 1919 and 1920 when they rejoined the league.
* Howard Richardson played 19 games for Richmond between 1915 and 1917, and then just one game for Melbourne when they rejoined the league in 1919 after their war-time absence.
* Hec Yeomans played 5 games for the Saints in 1920 then 15 games for Hawthorn in it's debut season in 1925.
* Joe Meehan played 5 games for Hawthorn in 1932 and 2 games for Melbourne
in 1938.
** Robert Carroll played 14 games for Melbourne between 1961-64, 4 games for Hawthorn in 1965, moved clubs mid-season and played and 9 games for Fitzroy in 1965-66.  He therefore took a part in both Hawthorn's 1965 and Fitzroy's 1966 wooden spoon seasons.
*** Jamie Barham (brother of Ricky), played 4 games for Melbourne in 1981 ,and then just 1 game for Footscray.  The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers does not mention which season he played the one game for Footscray, however Melbourne won the spoon in 1981 and Footscray did in 1982.
