FOOTYSTATS

Black Diamond FL president Ian Granland captured this special picture when 30,000 Geelong fans welcomed their premiership team back at Kardinia Park on Sunday afternoon.

Geelong can lay claim to being the most dominant team in AFL history after humiliating Port Adelaide by a record 119-point margin in good football conditions on Saturday at the MCG where 97,302 attended. Though there was a little rain in the morning, the match suffered no intrusion.

Paul Gough noted for Sportal: The Cats went into the 2007 premiership decider having already supplied this year's Brownlow medalist (Jimmy Bartel), the Rising Star winner (Joel Selwood) as well as winning the VFL premiership and supplying a record nine members of the All-Australian side.

Rohan Connolly writing for The Age noted: Geelong might have had the better of the opening salvos, but even as late as time-on of the first quarter, there was little indication we were about to witness not just a grand final thrashing, but a massacre so complete it was barely comprehensible.

When Port Adelaide ruckman Brendon Lade palmed a ruck contest straight into Shaun Burgoyne's lap for a brilliant goal late in the first term, Geelong led by just seven points. Sure, the young Power side had already committed some clangers, and shanked a couple of shots at goal, but Port led the clearance count eight to three, and with its second goal of the game, appeared to be finding some momentum.

Appeared being the operative word. For by quarter-time, the Power were already in deep trouble. Five minutes into the second term, the game was as good as over. And well before half-time, we were reaching for the record books.

Sportal's Gough recorded: The start of the second quarter will long be remembered by Cats' fans. They kicked five goals in the opening 12 minutes to extend their lead to 53 points and put the result beyond doubt in arguably the most dominant period of play ever witnessed in an AFL grand final.

By half-time the Cats led by 52 points – the third biggest margin ever at the main break in an AFL premiership decider – and despite the brave efforts of Peter Burgoyne it only got worse.

The Cats' shaky five point win over Collingwood in the preliminary final was a distant memory as Cameron Mooney and Bartel ended any hopes of a Port comeback with the first two goals of the third term to extend the lead to 65 points.

Every goal sparked scenes of jubilation amongst the pro-Cats crowd and Port's performance was summed up when shortly after Domenic Cassisi ran into an open goal and kicked out on the full from 30 metres out.

Port's forwards were unsighted with Brett Ebert, Daniel Motlop and Justin Westhoff managing just eight touches between them by half-time and while Peter Burgoyne and and the Cornes' brothers kept trying, they lacked support.

In contrast Geelong did not have a weak link in a performance for which coach Mark Thompson deserves the utmost credit – particularly for the way his team was able to remain calm and play its best football despite the weight of expectation and history that was on the team's back.

Thompson, who incredibly was almost sacked after the club's fall to 10th last season, becomes only the seventh man to captain (Essendon in 1993) and then coach a team to a premiership.
