NAB Cup rules
Rules operating in the series –

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Quarters in the NAB Cup run for 17½ minutes, plus time-on. In the home-and-away rounds, each quarter runs for 20 minutes plus time-on.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K In the event of a tied match, extra time of five (5) minutes each way will be played to decide a winner. Coaches are permitted to address their team once only, before the start of extra time.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K The team which kicks the most goals in the series will host the Grand Final. In the event of a tie, percentage will decide.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Field umpires bounce the ball at centre bounces only. Around the ground, the ball will be thrown up.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Any player taking a mark or free kick within the goal square will be lined up from the middle of the goals for his shot at goal, rather than being placed on an angle from the centre of the goals.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Any ball hitting the goal or behind posts during play that does not cross the goal or the boundary line will be play on.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K The boundary umpire will move in 10 metres from the boundary line to return the ball to play at all throw-ins.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Introduction of automatic time-on from when a field umpire crosses his arms until a ball-up.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Ball must travel 20 metres (not 15 metres) before a mark is awarded.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Removal of the requirement of a player kicking in after the scoring of behind to wait until the goal umpires continues to wave the flag. The kick-in can occur as soon as the goal umpire signals the score as a behind.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Players will only be prohibited from kicking backwards in their defensive half of the ground. They will be allowed to kick backwards to a teammate in the forward half without fear of umpires calling play-on. Previously players were allowed to pass backwards only in their team's forward 50-metre arc.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K A 10 metre outer circle and an inner circle of 3m in diameter for ruckmen to begin their contests for the centre bounce. A line will be drawn across both the centre and outer circle.

bull5.gif - 0.9 K Six-man inter-change – boosted to eight in "extreme" (over 30C) conditions.

Patchy light rain occasionally sprinkled the players in the NAB Cup opener on Friday night in warm conditions at Football Park. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was that Adelaide fielded five debutantes, while Port introduced only one new player in its line-up – the experienced David Rodan from Richmond.

Ashley Porter noted for The Age: Given Port's struggle last year, this was a quality performance, and supported the theory it has regained its hunger for success. There were passages of old traits likes overusing the football and aiming for the pockets, but it was game one of a long season and the Power will get better. Significantly, Peter Burgoyne and Daniel Motlop, who were shadows of themselves with serious injuries last season, gave great heart to the Port fans.

The undermanned Crows, who entered the match without 10 first-choice players, nearly scored a pre-season upset of giant proportions, fighting back from 17 points down late in the final term to draw within four points with three minutes left. Midfielder Michael Doughty then had the chance to win the game for Adelaide, which was outplayed for most of the game, when he ran in on goal from 35m only to pull his right-foot kick marginally to the left. The final margin was just three points in favour of Port, 89 to 86.

A near full-strength Kangaroo squad served up 51 point thrashing to Collingwood on fine and warm Gold Coast conditions at Carrara Oval on Friday night for a crowd which swelled to 11,341. Marc Fox reported for Sportal that the Kangas quickly gained control and dominated the first term, racking up six majors against their undermanned opponent.

The Kangas were far too strong for Collingwood who were missing their big guns, including skipper Nathan Buckley, Anthony Rocca, Paul Licuria, Brodie Holland and Alan Didak. On the flip side, the Roos were without their veteran Glenn Archer.

The Shinboners held a massive 63-point lead at three-quarter time and despite Collingwood kicking the first three goals of the last quarter, the Kangas were never threatened en route to a morale-boosting victory. Coach Dean Laidley said it was important to make a good impression on the Gold Coast where the club will play 10 premiership matches over the next three seasons.

Pre-season cup favourites the Western Bulldogs comfortably accounted for notoriously slow starters Sydney by 27 points at Manuka Oval in Canberra on a mild Saturday afternoon. Most eyes were on Bulldog recruit Jason Akermanis who celebrated his 30th birthday and his first appearance in the Tricolours. He picked up a modest 10 possessions and was worn live a glove by the dogged Kieren Jack, a local product from Pennant Hills and son of former rugby league topper Garry.

For the best of four quarters, the Bulldogs dominated. They led at every change and their midfield propelled by the increasingly influential Ryan Griffen. All-Australian Lindsay Gilbee played a typically creative match in defence. The Dogs unveiled two excitement machines in 18-year-old pair Malcolm Lynch and rookie Jarrod Harbrow who booted four goals between them – they stole the show.

Both sides were missing a host of big name players but the Dogs had more of their seniors on display and the poise of players such as skipper Brad Johnson, Matthew Robbins, Griffen and Daniel Cross proved crucial as the Swans lacked experienced bodies.

However, it was far from doom and gloom for last year's beaten grand finalists who looked to have found two more good players in 19-year-old Jesse White, who kicked three goals and at 196cm and 98kg already has a mature body, and fellow teenager Jonathan Simpkin, who won plenty of the ball in midfield.

(WB) was reported for a front-on bump to Paul Bevan (Syd). The MRP reviewed the incident and found there was no case to answer.

It's still early days but it is possible that the 15th season as a senior coach may be just a little kinder for Denis Pagan if the result over Essendon at Docklands on Saturday night is any guide. The Blues dominated the early stages and led by as much as 34 points late in the first half, before being gradually pegged back and, in the end, were lucky to hang on as the Bombers surged hard in the tense closing minutes.

Putting controversial off-season escapades aside, reigning Coleman Medallist Brendan Fevola notched a five-goal haul and proved a handful for Essendon's defensive duo of Mal Michael and Dustin Fletcher. Along with Fevola's strong performance, there was plenty to encourage Pagan. Top draft pick Bryce Gibbs showed glimpses of class, while Marc Murphy slotted in beautifully after missing the second half of his debut season with a shoulder injury. Calron midfielders Kade Simpson and Andrew Carrazzo impressed, as did the experienced Nick Stevens and Ryan Houlihan.

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy found plenty of positives, including the character the Bombers showed to come back. Young midfielder Angus Monfries was a standout, kicking three top goals. Fellow youngsters Jobe Watson and Brent Stanton were instrumental in the comback, along with speedster Andrew Lovett, who showed good signs.

The nail-biting finish was a crowd-pleaser for the 28,568 fans as Carlton just held on to win by four points.

The heavens opened up 30 minutes before the first bounce at Cazaly Oval on Saturday night in Cairns and the driving rain did not let up, providing the wettest conditions experienced in an AFL match for many years. The Lions, who trailed for most of the match, hit the front with eight minutes remaining to win by seven points.

But the final scores only tell part of the story as Ross Lyon's debut as St Kilda coach turned into a night he would rather forget as the Saints somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The Saints did not kick a goal in the second half and did not even score in the final term as Brisbane overcame a 28-point deficit at quarter-time despite the ground becoming so waterlogged after quarter-time that any precise movement of the ball was impossible – indeed the Saints' sixth and final goal was 13 minutes into the second quarter when Leigh Montagna popped one through.

With both sides under strength, and the conditions so terrible, other than the win by Brisbane, little else could be expected from such a scrappy and dogged affair.

Following the disappointment of finishing in 10th place last season, if Geelong supporters were looking for a lift, their side gave them new hope on Sunday afternoon in the sunshine of Kardinia Park. With Brad Ottens (four goals) and David Wojcinski playing near to their full potential, overall, the Cats played with flair and made the most of their obvious advantage – they were near full strength, while the Tigers were missing half-a-dozen key players through injury.

Ottens, particularly in the first half, played some of his best football in six years as the Cats led by 51 points at the main break, such was the Cats' dominance in the air. Richmond lacked key position players, as Shane Tuck was even forced to contest the ruck on occasions while the form of veteran full-back Darren Gaspar was a major cause for concern as he struggled with the new stricter interpretation on interference in marking contests.

Paul Gough for Sportal noted: Boom recruit Graham Polak also had a day to forget as he struggled with the Cats' array of attacking options, with Cameron Mooney also kicking four goals, and the only good news for the Tigers was the form of Nathan Brown and Chris Newman, who both appear to have fully recovered from their broken legs.

Key running players such as James Kelly, Wojcinski and Corey Enright look set for good seasons while Joel Selwood made an excellent debut and Shannon Byrnes and Matthew Stokes look to have improved significantly.

A staff glitch left thousands unable to get into Kardinia Park until most of the first quarter was gone. Gates were thrown open to all comers and an official crowd will not be possible. The AFL Monday offered an apology over the mix-up.

Report:
The MRP supported the report made on the day by umpire Kieron Nicholls that Andrew Krakouer (Rch) was charged with rough conduct after he kicked Darren Milburn (Gee) in the face during the second quarter. With an early plea and based on his good five-year record, the player was presented with the MRP suspension of one match. Richmond sought the adjudication of the AFL Tribunal.
The Tribunal on Tuesday found Krakouer not guilty of the charge of rough conduct.

The umpiring department chose Sunday night's match to experiment with all nine umpires, goal and boundary included, in the free kick decision-making process. Martin Blake reported for The Age that Glen Sinclair blew the whistle at the midway point of the third quarter and paid a free kick against Melbourne's Simon Godfrey, after Godfrey was tackled by Sam Mitchell (Haw).

As it happened, field umpire Matt Stevic had been unsighted and had incorrectly paid a free kick to Godfrey for a late slinging tackle by Mitchell. Then field umpire Chris Donlon intervened, having heard Sinclair's whistle. The free kick was reversed.

Outside of Sinclair's ruling, the AFL's one-off trial passed largely unnoticed. Umpires' director Jeff Gieschen said later that there were a total of three instances where the trial was used. In one case, a boundary umpire paid a free kick for a high tackle but the field umpire blew his whistle simultaneously. In another, a field umpire made an out-on-the-full ruling when the boundary umpire was behind the play.

Umpires appointed for this match: Matt Stevic (field), Chris Donlan (field), Ray Chamberlain (field), Stuart Wenn (field), Glenn Sinclair (boundary), John Morris (boundary), Gordon Muir (boundary), Steve Stirling (goal), Mark Harrison (goal) & Craig Clark (goal) – rotations were used.
__________

Melbourne led by as much as 21 points deep in the third quarter but Hawthorn surged home in the last term to win by four goals under the open roof at Docklands for the Sunday night match.

Jason Phelan noted for Sportal: The architect for the stunning come-from-behind win was Lance Franklin, who bagged four of his five goals in the last term, while Grant Birchall and Luke Hodge were also influential with 23 possession each.

The Demons were in with literally half a side – no Jeff White, Travis Johnstone, Brock McLean, Byron Pickett, Aaron Davey or Matthew Whelan to mention but a few – but they got excellent service from Cameron Bruce and Nathan Brown, who each had 29 disposals, while David Neitz and Russell Robertson bagged two goals apiece.

In a see-sawing match, Hawthorn had taken a five-point lead to quarter time, but the Demons stormed back with six unanswered goals through the second and third quarters to grab the lead. Then Hawthorn, with fresher legs and rising the influence of Hodge and Jordan Lewis around the stoppages, eventually overpowered Melbourne and ran away with the game.

Reports:

l Adem Yze
(Mel) charged with attempting to trip Robert Campbell (Haw) during the fourth quarter. Yze accepted the reprimand and 60 points added to his record.
l Campbell Brown (Haw) charged with a Level Three striking offence against Lynden Dunn (Mel) during the fourth quarter. Video showed Brown making high impact with his elbow. Hawthorn accepted the MRP ruling of a two-match suspension.

The Dockers and Eagles provided an entertaining start to the season in humid conditions late Sunday at Subiaco Oval to a big turn out of 39,027 fans. Both clubs fielded strong teams, with 17 of West Coast's premiership line-up playing, while Fremantle had most of their regulars. The AFL invoked the heat rule to allow both teams to have eight men on the bench after temperatures peaked at 36C.

Eagles midfielder Daniel Kerr sat out the game with a tight hamstring less than 24 hours after being arrested. Captain Chris Judd and vice-captain Andrew Embley also watched from the sidelines. The Dockers rested former captain Peter Bell and veterans Shane Parker and Troy Cook, while Heath Black, Byron Schammer and Chris Tarrant with injury could not be considered.

Craig O'Donoghue reported for The Age: The Eagles started in a rush, kicking the first two goals of the game, but failed to register a major from the seven-minute mark of the first term until 13 minutes into the third quarter. As is usual between these teams, the match typified a home-and-away contest more than a pre-season game.

Adam Selwood was first forced from the field during the opening term after he got crunched by Beau Waters, who was trying to bump Dean Solomon. Acting West Coast captain Darren Glass and young Docker Adam Campbell were then involved in a heavy clash, which resulted in both men leaving the field with bloodied heads.

West Coast was its own worst enemy in front of goal, with five of its six points in the first term from set shots. Fremantle's pressure was impressive, as was its run. Young Fremantle midfielder Andrew Browne celebrated his return to the AFL with two goals. Browne hadn't played for the Dockers since 2004 because of a horrendous run with injury but made good on his opportunity. Ryan Crowley impressed, and Solomon kicked a goal during the third quarter in his first Dockers game.

uuuu STAT OF THE WEEK uuuu
23 — The total number of marks that the winning Brisbane team held for the entire match. (about as many as Carlton took in each quarter). The quarter by quarter breakdown was 10, 2, 4 and  7.  So with just 13 marks in the last 3 quarters the Lions turned a 28 point deficit into a 7 point win.

Not bad for a game that was played underwater!  St.Kilda held 40 marks for the game, 8 in the first quarter and 10, 15 and 7 in the last 3 quarters. In their match Carlton managed a total of 97 marks, split into the quarters thus.. 20, 27, 26 and 24.

u None of the teams that lead at 3 quarter time increased their leads.
The Bulldogs and Fremantle held steady with their 12 and 37 point margins, whilst St.Kilda and Melbourne lost their leads.  The other 4 teams had their leads eroded.

u All the winners from the 2007 night series opening round finished lower than their opponents at the end of the 2006 premiership season
Port Adelaide (12) 2.9.2.11-89 d Adelaide (3) 2.10.1.5-86
Kangaroos (14) 1.15.2.12-117 d Collingwood (7) 1.8.0.9-66
West.B'dogs (6) 1.12.1.13-97 d Sydney (2) 1.9.0.7-70
Carlton (16) 1.10.0.14-83 d Essendon (15) 1.9.0.16-79
Brisbane (13) 0.7.0.10-52 d St Kilda (8) 1.5.1.3-45
Geelong (10) 3.17-0.10-139 d Richmond (9) 1.14.0.3-96
Hawthorn (11) 3.11.1.14-110 d Melbourne (5) 2.9.1.11-86
Fremantle (4) 4.11.0.10-112 d West Coast (1) 0.10.0.15-75

If the trend continues this weekend we should see Brisbane (13), Carlton (16), Port Adelaide (12) and Kangaroos (14) into the semi finals – i.e. 4 of the bottom 5 teams from 2006.

The opposite is more likely to happen in the opening round of the regular season – i.e. the top teams win..  So this means that we could expect Melbourne, Collingwood, Fremantle, Hawthorn, West Coast, Adelaide, Western Bulldogs and Richmond to win in Round 1.

Clinton Ling was the only player with 30 disposals from the opening round. Of his 13 kicks and 20 handballs, he had 4 kicks and 10 handballs in the second quarter alone.   Compare this to Richmond's entire team who had 33 handballs in the second quarter.

This weekend two of the most successful teams in the night series go head to head for the first time in a quarter final.

Overall, Hawthorn have played 104 matches for 68 wins and 36 losses and Carlton have played 94 matches for 55 wins and 39 losses.  Only the Kangaroos have played or won more matches, 105 and 64 respectively.

Hawthorn and Carlton have played in 36 out of a possible 56 quarter finals.
This is the first time they have reached a quarter final in the same season since 1991.
Hawthorn has turned 7 of their 11 quarter final victories into premierships. Carlton have turned only 3 of their 12 quarter final victories into premierships.

In the head to head, Hawthorn have met Carlton 5 times, and won on each and every occassion.

NAB CUP, QUARTER FINALS
Friday-Saturday-Sunday, March 2-3-4

The Bulldogs were strong favourites for Friday night's NAB quarter final played in fine weather under the open roof at Docklands. But, it was Brisbane who ran the Dogs off their feet with a host of midfielders outstanding, none more so that Michael Rischitelli who showed he's ready to turn last season's promised into something special.

Angus Morgan noted in his report for Sportal: Poised and balanced, Rischitelli used his 27 possessions to advantage and was the perfect foil for Simon Black (21 touches) who was every bit as effective as last week. Other standout Lions included Luke Power, Tim Notting, Jared Brennan and third-year ruckman Cameron Wood, who was superb around stoppages and by far the most effective big man on the ground.

Brisbane kicked eight unanswered goals from nine minutes into the third term until 10 minutes into the last that put the result beyond doubt. However, second-year Bulldogs Shaun Higgins could still hold his head high for his team, kicking four goals.

Cross sought adjudication of the Tribunal. Cross was unsuccessful in his plea and the full first offence fine of $3200 was applied.

In a tight and competitive contest throughout, Carlton just nudged Hawthorn away by seven points to win the NAB quarter final played under lights at York Park in Launceston on Saturday night in front of the biggest crowd of the weekend pre-season fixtures. The scores were tied seven minutes into the last term after Shane Crawford timed a run into goal perfectly and let go with a long, straight kick just a whisker from the 50m arc to register a nine-point supergoal.

Carlton fluffed four opportunities to hit back before Andrew Carrazzo gave his side breathing space with five minutes to go.  The Hawks poured on the pressure but the Blues stood firm. Midfielders Nick Stevens and Marc Murphy, and forward Brendan Fevola were among Carlton's best, while Sam Mitchell was outstanding for the Hawks with 31 possessions.

Lance Franklin, the 5-goal hero last week was statistically a little quieter in this outing. But the young man they call Buddy doesn't need many touches to be dangerous and with Mitchell and Crawford, was among the Hawk's best.

Geelong beat Port Adelaide by three-points on Saturday night at Darwin's Marrara Oval in a NAB quarter final played in a monsoonal storm which dumped 152mm of rain on the Top End in 24 hours. The drama of the occasion was further extended as the game went into extra time with scores locked at full-time, Geelong 0.8.0.6–54, Port 0.7.1.9–54.

After two five-minute periods to both ends, the Cats got home, courtesy of two Port mistakes – Brett Ebert played on from a mark in the goalsquare to hit the post in the first 5-minute period, then Chad Cornes hit the post with 24 seconds to play when given a chance to kick a nine-point goal on the back of a 50m penalty given away by Joel Corey. The Power still had time for one last roll of the dice, but Ebert dropped a chest mark 20m out from goal in the final few seconds.

The Australian reported such were the atrocious conditions in Darwin, Geelong coach Mark Thompson and Port Adelaide counterpart Mark Williams said they could take little out of the match, although both were pleased with their sides' efforts.

Geelong's win capped an eventful visit as the players and support staff endured a rough flight – having to circle Darwin airport for two hours on Friday before spending a further two hours sitting in the plane because of a torrid storm which lashed the tarmac and for safety reasons precluded airline staff from reaching them.

Reports:
l Mathew Stokes (Gee) for rough play on Domenic Cassisi (PA) during the third quarter. The MRP assessed the incident as bumping or making forefeel contact from front on, drawing a three-match suspension. Geelong sought adjudication from the Tribunal. The Tribunal sustained the charges against Stokes and increased his suspension to four premiership matches.
l Nathan Lonie (PA) cited for striking Andrew Mackie (Gee) and offered the penalty of a reprimand. Lonie pleaded guilty and accepted the MRP reprimand.

The Kangaroos were able to see off a desperate last quarter challenge from Fremantle in the fine conditions enjoyed on Sunday afternoon at Docklands. Freo roared back, slashing a 27-point lead to just eight. Jeff Farmer was leading another Docker charge as the siren sounded.

The Kangas gave further signs to encourage coach Dean Laidley, with plenty of scoring avenues in attack coming to light. Nathan Thompson booted two in a commanding first quarter, Leigh Brown (three goals) was strong throughout and crumbers Matt Campbell, Lindsay Thomas and Djaran Whyman – who are all yet to play a senior game – kicked six goals between them. James Walker led Fremantle with 25 possessions and he was well-supported by Josh Carr and Paul Hasleby who both had 24 touches.

After a tight first half, the Kangas blew the game open and threatened to run away with the opening five goals of the third term. Shannon Grant ran riot in the centre and Hamish McIntosh did so well at the hit outs that the Dockers moved Matthew Pavlich onto the ball. However, the Dockers were able to regroup but the Kangas were in no mood to surrender. The closing stages when quite a bit of spite crept in saw the Kangaroos hold on.

NAB (Week 2)
Regional Challenge series
Josh Fraser boots four in Magpie win over Saints
p
The Collingwood cheer squad got to sing their familiar theme song, but there was little to excite when the Magpies played St Kilda in fine and warm conditions on Friday afternoon. Both sides played with 10 reserves, so plenty got their first chances at senior footy. The Pies lost ex-Fremantle forward Paul Medhurst who rolled his left ankle while Brad Dick went down after a collision moments before half-time and both failed to appear in the second half. Collingwood ran out easy 31-point winners.

Collingwood: 15.10-100 (Fraser 4) best, Heath Shaw, Travis Cloke, Fraser, St Kilda: 7.10-52 (Milne 3) best, Ball, Fisher, Armitage.
Friday at Princes Park: about 4000.
__________

Adelaide outclass Demons
p Adelaide enjoyed a commanding 56-point win over a depleted Melbourne in warm conditions on Saturday afternoon at Mount Gambier for around 5,000 fans.
Brett Burton kicked four goals including three in the third quarter while the evergreen Andrew McLeod enjoyed a dominating game in the midfield. The Demons lost Ben Holland to a hip injury in the first quarter and Matthew Warnock injured an ankle. Melbourne's match-day coach Mark Riley put on a brave face admitting they were outclassed by the Crows, but said there were positives to come out of the day.

Adelaide: 14.16-100 (Burton 4) best, McLeod, Burton, Knights, Melbourne: (six singles) best, Aaron Davey, Jamar, Dunn.
Saturday at Mount Gambier: about 5000.
__________

Everitt debuts for the Swans
p Despite being rusty in his first game for eight months, 32-year-old Peter Everitt gave good signs in his first hit-out with Sydney in warm conditions on Saturday afternoon against Richmond at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The Swans' brain trust know it was good to shake the cobwebs off. The Tigers were missing a host of senior players as the Swans continue to steadily introduce premiership players back into their line-up. It was not all good news for Sydney with dashing defender Tadhg Kennelly suffering a bruised shoulder in the first half and Nic Fosdike reported for striking Matthew White in the last term.

Sydney: 13.7-85 (Phillips 3) best, Goodes, Fosdike, Phillips, Richmond: 10.6-66 (Johnson 2, Graham 2, Howat 2) best, Tambling, Johnson, Schultz.
Saturday at Manuka Oval: 3,365.
Report: Nic Fosdike (Syd) cited with striking Matthew White (Rch) during the fourth quarter and offered a one-match penalty. Sydney sought adjudication from the Tribunal. The Tribunal downgraded the charge; finding impact was low level rather than medium, thus freeing Fosdike to play.
__________

West Coast remain winless
p Premiers West Coast suffered their second pre-season loss when Essendon posted a 56-point win in the late Saturday match at Subiaco Oval.

With the Eagles missing Chris Judd, Ben Cousins, Andrew Embley, Dean Cox, Daniel Kerr and Michael Braun, it was the Bombers' perennial superstar Matthew Lloyd. Three goals each from Lloyd, Angus Monfries and impressive draftee Leroy Jetta, and two to Courtney Johns, overwhelmed the Eagles, who are still well short of top gear. The efforts of Matthew Priddis, Matt Rosa and David Wirrpunda would have pleased West Coast coach John Worsfold most, while Andrew Lovett and Jobe Watson impressed for the visitors.

Essendon: 15.10-100 (Lloyd 3, Monfries 3, Jetta 3) best, Lovett, Lloyd, Monfries, West Coast: 5.12-42 (five singles) best, Wirrpanda, Rosa, Priddis.
At Subiaco Oval: 11.012.

NAB CUP, SEMI-FINALS
Friday-Saturday, March 9-10

The revival of the Brisbane Lions stepped up another notch on Saturday night when it efficiently disposed of Geelong in the NAB semi-final played under the open roof at Docklands. For the third straight week the Lions, playing away from home caused the upset – this time they disposed of last year's Cup winner.

Brisbane came out humming against Geelong despite the absence of a few critical players, Martin Blake observed in his report for The Age.
Geelong, the defending pre-season premier and the nominal favourite, was taken aback. Nobody encapsulated the Cats' malaise so definitively as Matthew Scarlett, their laconic full-back. Scarlett should have been in for a whale of a night. The Lions had Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw unavailable, and Scarlett found himself zoning off and without a man to account for early on.

The tallest potential opponent for Scarlett would have been pint-sized Ash McGrath, Lions' coach Leigh Matthews trying to cobble something from limited stocks. Scarlett ran around on his own, dropped marks, fumbled ground balls and, once, handballed directly to an opponent for a first-quarter goal.

Geelong was inept, virtually incapable of finding the football and directionless when it did. By half-time, the Cats had racked up 178 disposals for only three goals, equating to 60 touches for every goal. This statistic, which Denis Pagan has been known to call the "strike-rate", is just about as good a measure of efficiency that we have in the game. But you want to have 20 disposals a goal; not 60. Travis Varcoe's appearance, the first sighting of a Cat in a No. 5 guernsey since the great Gary Ablett retired 11 years ago, was about the only positive sign for Geelong fans. He responded with two soccered goals in the second quarter, the only major scores of a deplorable term.

The Lions played a form of soccer, flooding back then counterattacking, flicking the ball sideways and trying to carry the ball inside 50 for their goals. For a time, it was effective. But in the third quarter, Cam Mooney began to have an impact and Geelong's slightly more conventional front-half set-up began to work.

Then it turned again and Brisbane found a way to hold on. The Lions are into the grand final because they had a couple of wily multi-premiership campaigners in Simon Black and Luke Power. Black was relentless despite having Cameron Ling chasing him; acting as captain for the evening, he was best afield. And it was Power's goal on the run – initially signalled as a nine-pointer and later reduced to six points – at the 22-minute mark that sealed the Lions' win.

Carlton full-forward Brendan Fevola helped his side stage a remarkable second-half comeback as the Blues overran the Kangaroos in the NAB semi-final played at Carrara on the Gold Coast on Saturday night. Carlton looked buried 37 points down late in the third quarter but then kicked 10 goals straight – and kept the Kangas to just two scores in the final term. Fevola finished the night with eight goals, including a nine-pointer in the first quarter.

The late surge in a game of momentum shifts secured another impressive win for the Blues and came after the Kangaroos had kicked seven consecutive goals. Jackie Epstein noted in the Herald Sun: Then Fevola re-entered the fray after a brief spell on the bench in the third quarter. He made a statement by taking hangers, kicking disciplined goals, including three in four minutes, and was a genuine leader.

Playing their best side – minus Josh Kennedy, a late withdrawal – the Blues put in a performance that was dogged and exciting. It's also a sure bet Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Nick Stevens will form a formidable engine room this year. Setanta O'hAilpin took another giant step forward, showing confidence and poise in defence, and had the better of Nathan Thompson.

In an exceptional transformation, the Kangaroos stopped to a walk and scored only two goals from late in the third term. Coach Dean Laidley preferred to look at the positives saying he had a better gauge of his team's strengths and weaknesses heading into the premiership season with Lindsay Thomas and Matt Campbell the best of his youngsters to show out.

Eagles last quarter burst flattens the Crows
p
After trailing by 29 points midway through the third term West Coast stormed home to beat Adelaide by seven points in steamy conditions in Alice Springs on Friday night. Former Perth boy Nathan van Berlo was solid for the Crows, the evergreen Andrew McLeod as fluid as ever, Tyson Edwards and Ben Rutten were strong through the centre. Both sides fielded strong line-ups with Dean Cox, Chris Judd, Daniel Kerr and Matt Priddis in the middle.

West Coast 12.12-84 (Lynch 2, Hunter 2) best, Hurn, Kerr, Braun, Adelaide 11.11-77 (Bock 3, Welsh 3) best, Goodwin, van Berlo, Reilly.
Friday night at Traeger Park, Alice Springs: about 11,000.

Sydney dominate young Magpies
p A crowd of 10,500 turned out to help drought relief on Friday night at Narrandera. A slick Sydney combination outgunned Collingwood which prompted coach Paul Roos to observe he can't remember the Swans as sharp before in a pre-season under him. Roos noted: "Mick O'Loughlin is a mile ahead of where he was last year and Adam Goodes (four goals), fitness-wise, is looking great, Nick Malceski is another one who is looking really good and Jarrad McVeigh looks really good. So if you balance it out with the guys we'll be missing in Round 1 we are comfortable with where we are." Best for the Pies was the tenacious Paul Licuria who copped a nasty head wound in the second quarter but returned to kick two goals.

Sydney 19.9-123 (Goodes 4, McVeigh 3, Vogels 3) best, Everitt, Goodes, Collingwood 10.7-67 (Rocca 3, Licuria 2) best, Reid, Licuria.
Friday night at Narrandera: 10,500.

Rodan and Nathan Krakouer star in Port's big win over Saints
p Port new boys David Rodan and Nathan Krakouer impressed in an easy 57-point victory over St Kilda in front of a tiny crowd at Football Park. Draftee Krakouer bagged the first two goals of the game and finished with three, and former Richmond rover Rodan proved a bundle of energy to boot four of his own, a tally matched by Brett Ebert from the forward pocket. Port's speed was a headache for the Saints who had Stephen Milne tried hard with four goals while Nick Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard and veteran Robert Harvey all worked hard.

Port Adelaide 21.14-140 (Rodan 4, Ebert 4, Krakouer 3, Willits 3) best, Rodan, Salopek, Thomson, St Kilda 12.11-83 (Milne 4) best, Dal Santo, Harvey, Thompson.
Friday night at Football Park: 4,424.

Melbourne hold out Richmond
p Melbourne controlled the game at Princes Park through the midfield dominance of Cameron Bruce, Travis Johnstone, Nathan Jones and Chris Johnson. Skipper David Neitz booted three first-half goals but was rested for the final quarter after suffering stomach pains. Ruckman Jeff White also kicked three goals.

Richmond was led by half-forward Kayne Pettifer, who had 15 marks and kicked two goals. But the Tigers overused the ball and coach Terry Wallace said inaccurate conversion cost them dearly. The Demons would have been encouraged by rookie defender James Frawley's hard running off half-back. Aaron Davey bobbed in and out of the game, providing the highlight in the third quarter when he trapped the ball on the boundary line in heavy traffic, propped and kicked a goal over his shoulder.

Melbourne 15.13-103 (Neitz 3, White 3) best, Bruce, Johnstone, Bizzell, Richmond 10.15-75 (Polak 2) best, Tuck, Pettifer, Foley.
Saturday at Princes Park: about 2,000.

Bulldogs easily over Bombers; Lloyd kicks seven
p The Bulldogs were delighted that Luke Darcy and Robert Murphy made successful returns in the practice match played on Saturday at Geelong. After two serious knee injuries Darcy had his first match for almost two years while Murphy coped well in his first outing since doing his knee in Round 9 last year. Also of note for the Dogs was the continued good form of former Eagle Andrew McDougall and Adam Cooney and Farren Ray slotting back into the side. Essendon skipper Matthew Lloyd hit top form in his return after his 2006 was ruined by injury, but while he kicked seven goals it was not enough as the Doggies held on to win by 11 points.

West.B'dogs 15.12-102 (Giansiracusa 3) best, Cooney, Fay, Giansiracusa, Essendon 13.13-91 (Lloyd 7) best, Lloyd, Hird, Davey.
Saturday at Kardinia Park: about 4,000

Crawford reported in Docker win over Hawks in Perth
p Docker fans would have been disappointed with the first outside for Chris Tarrant on Saturday night against Hawthorn at Subiaco. In his first run, Tarrant finished with three kicks, four marks, four handballs and no goals. For Hawthorn, Tim Boyle's three goals, two from Matthew Little, a cousin of James Hird – and a good showing by Jordan Lewis were pluses for the Hawks. For Freo, James Walker continued his good pre-season form with 28 touches.

Hawthorn's Shane Crawford was booked late in the game for striking Peter Bell (Fre).

Fremantle 12.12-84 (Campbell 3) best, Walker, M Carr, Bell, Hawthorn 9.9-63 (Boyle 3) best, Boyle, Franklin, Bateman.
Saturday at Subiaco Oval: 6,321.
Report: Shane Crawford (Haw) reported for striking Peter Bell (Fre) during the fourth quarter.

Blues take second pre-season title in three years
Carlton boosts morale with NAB victory

In a matter of weeks, Carlton have revived their fortunes in an astonishing manner and capped off a morale-boosting period by winning the NAB crown from Brisbane in the pre-season competition grand final played on Saturday night at Docklands Stadium before a big crowd of 46,094.

Carlton midfielder Nick Stevens won the Michael Tuck Medal as best afield after collecting 26 possessions to become the first player to twice win the award, having done so as a member of Port Adelaide's 2002 win over Richmond.

Paul Gough for Sportal reported that in addition to the decisive presence of Stevens the Blues had heroes at either end of the ground in spearhead Brendan Fevola and Irish defender Setanta O'hAilpin, who shut down Lions' powerhouse Jonathan Brown in his much anticipated comeback game.

Irish eyes were certainly smiling on the Blues on St Patricks' Day as O'hAilpin, who has played just 12 games, kept the game's pre-eminent key forward – who was playing his first game since round 10 last year following a hip injury – goalless during the first three quarters.

However Brown did appear rusty throughout and ominously for rival teams showed glimpses of his old self in the final term with two goals but it was not enough to inspire a Brisbane comeback as the Lions paid the price for some inaccurate kicking.

The Lions started better and by quarter-time had 23 more possessions and six more inside 50s than the Blues yet trailed by eight points after conceding an unnecessary nine-point goal to Brad Fisher after Jared Brennan gave away an undisciplined free kick and 50-metre penalty.

It was the first of four goals for Fisher while Fevola also helped himself to four.

The Lions actually got 14 points up late in the second term in their bid to win on the road for the fourth successive week and lift their first pre-season trophy but the Blues then reeled off seven successive goals from just before half-time to the 20-minute mark of the third term to take control of the game.

Yet again it was Fevola, the reigning Coleman Medalist and Michael Tuck Medalist back in 2005 that inspired the Blues' revival with two third term goals - one of them coming from a great one handed mark.

The Lions briefly threatened early in the final term but fittingly Fevola sealed the game with his fourth goal to the delight of a pro-Blues crowd, who will be desperately hoping that after five years in the doldrums this pre-season premiership success will lift the club to greater heights than in 2005 when the Blues finished with the wooden spoon.

Nathan Thompson out for season; Lenny Hayes reported
p
A big slice of the Kangaroo attack for the season disappeared in the second term at Princes Park when St Kilda's Sam Fisher dived across Nathan Thompson's left leg to spoil. By Saturday night the season was over for Thompson when surgery repaired a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament forcing him to miss all of 2007. The news was much better for the Saints who welcomed the return of co-captain Lenny Hayes following his knee injury – he picked up more than a dozen kicks and showed he had not lost any pace or agility.

St Kilda 10.13-73 (Milne 4, Voss 2) best, Harvey, Hayes, Dal Santo, Kangaroos 9.8-62 (Edwards 3, Jones 3) best, Harvey, Jones, Edwards.

Report: Lenny Hayes (StK) for high contract on Lindsay Thomas (Kan) during the fourth quarter. The charge was reviewed and dismissed by the MRP, who believed he was attempting to spoil.

Tigers hold on in face of strong Magpie finish
p Richmond controlled most of the game but after keeping Collingwood goalless in the third term failed to capitalise on their dominance by kicking only 4.8 after half time. The closeness of the scores masked the question – who will kick Collingwood's goals this season? While Anthony Rocca loomed up forward he was well held by Joel Bowden and a Tiger outfit which boasted close to their best line-up, with only Matthew Richardson, Troy Simmonds and Mark Coughlan (all injured) among the few big names absent.

Richmond 10.12-72 (Brown 4) best, Brown, Johnson, Tambling, Collingwood 9.11-65 (Cloke 3, Lockyer 2, Licuria 2) best, Thomas, Cloke, Licuria.

Port maintain strong start over sagging Swans
p
Port coach Mark Williams praised his side for surviving a second-half comeback from Sydney to score a five-point win at Stadium Australia at Homebush on Saturday night. Michael Crowley reported in The Age that early on the Swans looked no near as sharp as they had in Narrandera last week and were lucky to have recovered.

Port Adelaide 14.13-97 (Ebert 4, White 3) best, Pettigrew, Ebert, Pearce, Sydney 14.8-92 (Davis 3, Hall 2, Jolly 2) best, Barry, C.Bolton, Fosdike.

Dockers win with added forward punch from Tarrant
p Fremantle revelled in the combination of Chris Tarrant and Matthew Pavlich at Football Park on Friday night – the Dockers were never threatened from the moment Tarrant kicked his first major; he finished with four. Adelaide had a paltry 2.10 to its name at half-time, its midfield outclassed by a Fremantle side whose relentless pressure forced the Crows to make many errors. Adelaide, which has won just one of four pre-season encounters, failed to improve in the second half.

Fremantle 12.11-83 (Tarrant 4, Gilmore 2) best, Sandilands, Tarrant, Pavlich, Adelaide 7.16-58 (Bode 2) best, Johncock, Bode, Bassett.
Friday night at Football Park: 5278.
Report: Matthew Carr (Fre) for striking Nathan Bassett (Ade) during the fourth quarter. The MRP cited Carr, assessing the incident as reckless, of medium impact and of high contact drawing a total of 225 demerit points. Carr was offered an early plea of a one-match suspension and 168.75 demerit points. The player admitted guilt and the penalty imposed.
__________

Five reported in Essendon-Hawthorn practice match
p A slew of reports and Essendon with only one goal in the first half, were the highlights at Casey Fields at Cranbourne on Saturday afternoon. Alwyn Davey, one of the Bombers' recent acquisitions, kicked three goals to be his side's leading scorer while Matthew Lloyd kicked two from five shots. Samantha Lane reported for The Age: Coach Kevin Sheedy was most impressed by his defenders. Mark McVeigh (38 touches) led the way, but Sheedy picked a 2006 debutant, Patrick Ryder, who he wants to play at half-back this season, as his standout. Hawk coach Alastair Clarkson admitted "we just run out of puff in the end".

Essendon 10.15-75 (Davey 3, Lloyd 2) best, Hird, Monfries, Davey, Hawthorn 9.11-65 (Williams 3, Franklin 3) best, Mitchell, Hodge, Franklin.
Saturday at Casey Fields, Cranbourne: 3500.
Reports:
l David Hille (Ess) by umpire Troy Pannell for striking Beau Muston.
l Kepler Bradley (Ess) by umpire Mathew James for making forceful contact to the head of Grant Birchall (Haw).
l Luke Hodge (Haw) by umpire Luke Farmer for striking Matthew Lloyd Ess).
l Luke Hodge (Haw) by umpire Mathew James for charging Damien Peverill (Ess).
The above four charges were reviewed and dismissed by the MRP.

l Shane Crawford (Haw) by umpire Mathew James for using abusing and insulting language towards an umpire. The MRP cited Crawford and offered him to accept with an early plea a fine of $1800. The player admitted guilt and accepted the penalty imposed.

p Mark Boulton reporting for The Age and SEN noted that Geelong coach Mark Thompson had three causes for satisfaction – there was a 25-point win, the form of best-and-fairest Paul Chapman and, perhaps most importantly, no major injuries. Opposing coach Neale Daniher said it was "a bit frustrating" that he was yet to field anything close to the club's best side. In a largely scrappy affair, poor kicking from both sides – five goals in the first half – helped keep the Demons in touch. Better Melbourne news was the return on Brock McLean, who's shaved head stood out – he played his best footy in the second half.

Geelong 11.13.79 (Mooney 4, Gardiner 2, N.Ablett 2) best, Bartel, Mooney, Milburn, Melbourne 7.12-54 (Robertson 3. Neitz 2) best, Johnstone, Ward, Jones.
Saturday at Kardinia Park: 2500.

Bulldogs lose Grant to injury as premiers continue to lose
p Key injuries to Chris Grant (groin) and Wayde Skipper (leg) took the gloss off a 20-point win by the Bulldogs over West Coast on Saturday afternoon at Subiaco. The Doggies were coached by Chris Bond, deputising for Rodney Eade who was absent because of a family illness. After a tumultuous week in which the Eagles were embroiled in a drugs furore, the home team took forever to kick into gear and was goalless until 10 minutes into the second term. Craig O'Donoghue reported for The Age: The Eagles launched a series of stirring fightbacks throughout the game, led by their stars. Chris Judd and Ben Cousins sprang to life midway through the second term, Quinten Lynch kicked three goals in the third term, and then the Eagles reduced the deficit to only eight points nearing time-on in the final quarter, before Brad Johnson sealed the win.

For the Dogs, Nathan Eagleton had plenty of the ball in the midfield, Johnson, Scott West and Adam Cooney were their usual prominent selves, Luke Darcy showed signs that he could return to the player he was before his knee injuries and Shaun Higgins was lively in attack.

West.B'dogs 15.6-96 (Johnson 3, Eagleton 2, Cooney 2, Higgins 2) best, Eagleton, West, Johnson, West Coast 11.10-76 (Lynch 4, Armstrong 2, LeCras 2) best, Cousins, Judd, Wirrpunda.
Saturday at Subiaco Oval: 6873.

NAB Cup stats that matter

Carlton have won the pre-season night premiership after winning the day wooden spoon, so are numero uno on the pre-season ladder.

For the 3rd time in 4 years the highest percentage has not been by the pre-season premiers, but the 2nd second placed team on the pre-season ladder.  In 2003 it was the Kangaroos (169.40) over Adelaide (120.74).  In 2005 it was Richmond (140.96) over Carlton (137.54).  In 2006 it was Adelaide (165.05) over Geelong (127.80).  In 2007 it is Fremantle (125.00) over Carlton (116.776).

For the first time since 2002, every team has won a pre-season match. In both seasons 10 of the 16 teams finished with a percentage above 100.00 Since 2002, the teams without a pre-season win have been Port Adelaide in 2003, Hawthorn (with a draw) and Collingwood in 2004, Sydney, Hawthorn again and Essendon in 2005 and St.Kilda in 2006 (2 years after winning the 2004 premiership)

For the second consecutive season, St.Kilda have finished on the bottom of the pre-season ladder behind West Coast.  St.Kilda also finished on the bottom in 2002 behind Collingwood, and second last in 2003.  From those 4 pre-seasons they  managed just 3 wins from 17 matches.

Hawthorn (11th) and Western Bulldogs (6th) are the only two teams that finished in exactly the same place from the 2006 regular season to the 2007 pre-season.  In contrast to the 2003 pre-season when Hawthorn finished 6th and the Western Bulldogs 11th.

This has also been the most even pre-season over the last 6 years.  This pre-season's largest percentage is the lowest (150.64, 169.40, 146.80, 140.96, 165.06, 125.00), and the smallest percentage is the highest (64.63, 64.97, 56.02, 67.48, 70.11, 71.47).

Surprisingly, the most successful team in the preseason since 2002 has been Fremantle - despite not reaching a Grand Final.  Their finishing positions have been 4th, 4th, 9th, 6th, 4th and 2nd, for a total of 17 wins and 8 losses and with the highest overall percentage.  They have overtaken
Adelaide on top, after defeating them by 25 points on the weekend.

Since 2002, Carlton have won 15 games and lost 10, yet have a percentage below 100.

At the other end of the table, bottom place was up for grabs between St.Kilda, Hawthorn and Essendon.  The Saints avoided bottom place by upsetting Kangaroos by 11 points.  After trailing by 28 points at half-time, Essendon ran over Hawthorn to win by 10 points and relegate Hawthorn to the bottom of the 2002-2007 pre-season ladder.

On a final note, it's worth noting that last year's grand finalists West Coast and Sydney finished 15th and 14th respectively on the 2006 pre-season ladder, and the 2005 premiers, Sydney, finished 14th on the 2005 pre-season ladder.
