Carey:
debate on Hall of Fame suitability |
Wayne Carey's record of misbehaviour
will spark a debate over his suitability for the AFL's Hall of Fame,
similar to that which surrounded Gary Ablett's induction,
selector Kevin Bartlett said yesterday. Carey becomes eligible
for the Hall of Fame this year and, like Ablett, would have immediately
been inducted if judged on football ability alone.
"I reckon it would polarise the community," Bartlett told Melbourne
sports radio network SEN.
Bartlett said Carey would almost certainly have been inducted this year
if not for his off-field record.

Geelong first to wear special premiership badge
Geelong's players will carry a constant reminder of last year's
premiership glory on their jumpers this season.
Darryl
Timms reports in the Herald Sun that in an AFL initiative
announced yesterday, the club that wins the Grand Final will wear a gold
premiership logo on its jumpers the following season.
The Cats were cautious about accepting the league's offer and becoming
the first club to wear the logo.
They had some concerns that the badge of honour would label the players
as cocky.
But Geelong captain Tom Harley said he liked the idea of the Cats
starting a tradition of wearing a premiership logo. He does not believe
it will become a target for opposition players.
Geelong has decided to keep this season's special jumpers exclusive to
the players and will not produce replicas for sale.
AFL chief commercial and broadcasting officer Gillon McLachlan
said the reigning premier would now be recognised each time it played
during the season.
"On the jumpers of the premiership team we will have a gold AFL logo
with 2007 Premiers instead of the usual AFL logo," McLachlan said
yesterday. "What this does is give each player of the premiership club
the recognition for the entire year.
Geelong's chief operating officer Stuart Fox said the AFL
approached the club late last year about becoming the first club to wear
a premiership logo.
Fox said the Cats had been given the option by the AFL to market replica
premiership jumpers but had decided they would only be worn by players.
The logo would appear on each jumper worn by a Geelong player this
season, not just those who played in last year's premiership.

Carey faces assault charges in Miami |
Fallen AFL legend Wayne Carey could
face jail in the United States if convicted over a wild clash with his
girlfriend and Miami police.
David Hastie reports just 48 hours after police used capsicum
spray on Carey and handcuffed him at his Port Melbourne apartment, the
Herald Sun has learned he is already facing serious charges in
Miami.
Carey was arrested and charged by Miami police during a holiday with
girlfriend Kate Neilson last October.
Ms Neilson allegedly told police the former football great smashed a
wine glass on her face, cutting her mouth and neck.
If convicted of third degree felony charges in Florida, penalties
include up to five years' jail, five years' probation and a $US5000
fine.
Police were called to the five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel about
midnight on October 27. They found Carey, 36, asleep in his room.
Official police reports say that when they woke him he appeared drunk
and lashed out, kicking one officer in the mouth and elbowing another in
the face.
He was taken to Dade County jail where he was charged with assaulting a
public servant, resisting an officer with violence and aggravated
battery. He is due to face the Miami-Dade County Court on February 15.

Buckley
to replace Carey at 3AW
The Australian reports the new revelations came as
top-rating Melbourne radio station 3AW said Carey's departure as a
commentator had nothing to do with his troubles with police.
"Wayne Carey had an agreement for one year with 3AW, which was to cover
the 2007 AFL season," the station's general manager, Graham Mott,
said last night. "Wayne's obligations finished at the end of the 2007
season."
Mr Mott confirmed there had been an in-principle agreement reached
between the station now part of the Fairfax Media Group and retired
Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley before Christmas.
Buckley is likely to replace Carey on the station's commentary team, but
the deal is yet to be finalised, Mr Mott said.

Nine pass up Carey
contract renewal
In Wednesday morning developments, the managing director of GTV-9 Jeffrey Browne
says the Nine Network will not renew its contract with Carey, who has
been working as a commentator.
"That contract expired at the end of last season and while negotiations
had commenced for a new contract, Nine has now terminated those
negotiations," Mr Browne said. |

West Coast have fined their number one draft pick Chris Masten
$2000 after an incident during Perth's Australia Day fireworks display.
Rookie Masten was issued a "move on" order by police at the event held

Carey's
career hangs on police charges |
Wayne Carey's media career hung in
the balance last night as police considered laying assault charges
against the Australian football champion.
As footage surfaced (on Channel Nine and the Seven Network) yesterday of
Carey after he was subdued with capsicum spray by police outside his
Port Melbourne apartment on Sunday night, media outlets indicated his
professional future rested on whether he was charged.
A police source told The Australian last night there was "still
every chance" Carey would be charged with assaulting police.
A spokesman for the Nine Network said there would be no comment on
Carey's future until after the police investigation had concluded.
Radio 3AW general manager Graham Mott said Carey's one-year deal
with the station had expired.
An industry source said last night that 3AW had decided not to renew
Carey's contract this year, before Sunday night's episode. "If he was
any chance, I would say this would be the end of it," the source said.

Neale Fong resigns over WA crime and corruption findings
l
WAFC stands by its chairman
The return of WA Inc was felt with full force yesterday when
Australia's highest-paid public servant was forced to resign
following a damning corruption report linking him to former premier
Brian Burke.
The West Australian Government is now bracing itself for nine
reports, to be released in the next three months by the Corruption
and Crime Commission, all involving Mr Burke's lobbying activities.
John Lyons reports in The Australian: The CCC
yesterday recommended that the Director of Public Prosecutions
consider legal action against Neale Fong, the state's
$565,272-a-year director-general of health.
Dr Fong resigned shortly after the report was made public, saying he
was embarrassed that he had not recalled 33 emails between himself
and Mr Burke, but that they had been "totally innocuous".
Premier Alan Carpenter had banned all contact between members of his
Government and Mr Burke. This followed ministers, MPs and public
servants being caught passing confidential information to the
lobbyist, who used it to advance the interests of his corporate
clients.
Dr Fong had told the CCC under oath that there was no personal or
professional business relationship between himself and Mr Burke and
that he had no recollection of any of the 33 emails. The CCC
recommended that consideration be given for Dr Fong to be prosecuted
because of "his representation of his relationship with former
premier Mr Brian Burke".
The CCC claimed Dr Fong had engaged in three cases of misconduct,
the most serious being that he disclosed to Mr Burke that the CCC
was investigating a fellow senior officer in his department.
The nine current investigations relating to the activities of Mr
Burke are set to claim the scalps of more politicians and public
servants. In the past year, four ministers, several public servants
and some of the Government's key advisers have lost their jobs as a
result of the new WA Inc activities of Mr Burke and his lobbying
partner, former minister Julian Grill.
Neale Fong is also chairman of the WA Football Commission.
ABC Sport Online on Saturday reported the WA Football
Commission is standing by its chairman Neale Fong.
The chief executive officer of the WAFC, Wayne Bradshaw, says the
adverse findings did not relate to football, and Dr Fong has been an
excellent chairman for a long time.
He says the commission will consider its position further on the
matter, but for now would be standing by Dr Fong.

Damien Barrett noted in Thursday's Herald Sun that a polo

the Abu Dhabi Emirate about 30 minutes from Dubai and 45 minutes from
Abu Dhabi. The

The conversion in the United Arab Emirates is in the good hands of Tony Hemming,
former curator at Docklands, Princes Park and York Park.
The playing oval will be 155m x 136m, compared to Docklands which is 160m
x 129m.
In parallel with the match

ferrets out Ben Buckley's soccer spin |
Sunday's (January 20th) online (Sydney) Sun-Herald *, under
the headline Big crowds push A-league into world elite*,
"FFA chief Ben Buckley" [sic] made the claim that "this season
will see Australian football join the ranks of the world's most highly
attended leagues".
[
http://www.smh.com.au/news/a-league/big-crowds-push-aleague-into-world-elite/2008/01/19/1200620273137.html ]
Now, if he who was once 'our' Ben had used these self-same
words to talk up the attendances of the game run by his former employer,
namely, the AFL Commission, he'd have the stats to back up this Very Big
Statement: Australian football's seasonal average per-match crowd of
38,113^ is second only to that of America's mighty NFL, which came in
last season at 67,738 (yes, 67 thousand).
But, in his current job, he wasn't: when he now uses the
expression 'Australian football', he is referring to soccer.
So what figure is he talking up? It's wait for it,
breathlessly 14,466. Yes, mid-14000, not mid-24,000, much less
mid-34,000.
In a Wikipedia^ list, his A-league lot come in at about 25th, way below
European soccer's Bundesliga and EPL at mid 30,000s, American baseball
low 30,000 and Canadian 'gridiron' (not that they call it that; for them
it's 'Canadian football', like, you know, how most of us talk
of 'Australian football') just under 30,000.
Then there's four 20,000s, and way down in about 25th, come our
national soccer competition, if the Wikipedia figures for "Indoor
Sports" are included.
Pull the other one, Mr Buckley it plays Up there Cazaly.
And just when does "world elite" cut in ?
PS: interesting, also, that three 'indigenous' (in a broad
sense) codes of football are among the top six.
