Former West Coast captain Chris Judd is the standout in the group with former Port Adelaide midfielder Nick Stevens at 28 is the most senior player.

Kade Simpson, at 23, is the youngest, while former Collingwood player Heath Scotland, Coleman medalist Brendan Fevola and ball-magnet Andrew Carrazzo round out the list.

The decision who will replace the axed captain Lance Whitnall is expected shortly. The match committee will choose the new leader, subject to approval of the board.

Geelong sanction Steve Johnson
l
Cats impose penalty of 50 hours community work
Geelong has ordered premiership forward Steve Johnson to undertake 50 hours of community service after he was caught driving 78 kilometres-an-hour over the speed limit last week.

ABC Sport Online reports the 24-year-old has already had his licence suspended for 12 months and will spend time working with victims of road accidents and their families.

The leadership group got together and decided on Johnson's sanction, which has the blessing of the club.

Geelong chief executive officer Brian Cook says the club did not consider sacking last year's Norm Smith medallist and thought a fine would do little to educate the player.

The Geelong Advertiser noted: Cook said a suspension or sacking was never considered for the punishment, which was eventually unanimously endorsed by the board on Monday.

''There's never been a formal communication to Steve Johnson saying `This is your last warning and you will no longer be contracted to us if you do repeat an offence'. That hasn't been the case and isn't the case now."

Geelong captain Tom Harley said in a statement, "The law will punish Steve both in financially via a fine, and also from the viewpoint that he will not be able to drive for 12 months.

"What is important to us is that Steve be motivated to change by taking action that he has to initiate and follow through.

"We believe that 50 hours working with victims of road trauma is a significant additional sanction for what he has done."

Johnson has previously been suspended by the club for an alcohol related incident when the Cats barred him from the first six matches last year (Diary 2007-Jan-02). He returned and played a season which gained him All-Australian selection and he won the Norm Smith Medal as best-afield in Geelong's first premiership win in 44 years.

He was appointed WA State 16s coach last October and has spent the past three seasons as coach of the WAFL's Falcons' colts side. Bell will replace Peter Worsfold in the position with Worsfold taking on the development manager role at the club.

n The Western Bulldogs have added Matthew Boyd and Dale Morris to the club’s leadership group. The duo join captain Brad Johnson and deputies Scott West, Robert Murphy, Daniel Cross and Daniel Giansiracusa as the club’s leaders this year.

l Focus turns to South Africa
A large contingent of AFL footballers will move into preparation for a new season in South Africa, where Fremantle, Carlton, Adelaide and Collingwood will play matches in the coming weeks. West Coast have also visited the nation in December as part of a training and promotional experience.

Footygoss notes Saturday week will see the Dockers and the Blues in an exhibition game at SuperSport Park in Pretoria which on February 2 will be broadcasted live locally on South African cable-TV and is likely to be well attended by thousands of young players from four nearby provinces who will provide the curtain-raiser.

Collingwood who flew into South Africa at the weekend as part of their preparation for the new season, are attending the high-altitude facility at Potchefstroom which is 120 km west-southwest of the largest city Johannesburg.

AFL football officially kicks off again in 18 days when two of last years finalists – Collingwood and Adelaide go head to head in the opening NAB Cup game in Dubai.

The much-anticipated contest will be played at the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club on February 9 after the league initially ran into trouble with venue issues (no alcohol will be served at the ground), but everything is now in readiness for the game which will also see a curtain-raiser played between two of Dubai’s leading AFL teams – the Dingoes and the Heat.

North Melbourne land Eugene Arocca as new CEO
North Melbourne has landed its man, announcing Friday that Eugene Arocca will be the new chief executive.

A long-time Collingwood board member, then, more recently, the Magpies' chief operations officer, Arocca was at the head of a shortlist the Kangaroos had drawn up for the position left vacant by the resignation of Rick Aylett following the club's decision not to move to the Gold Coast.

"Eugene comes armed with an enormous range of skills, both from within football and as a highly successful lawyer and businessman in his own right," North Melbourne chairman James Brayshaw said last night. "He has worked most recently in an elite environment at Collingwood and we couldn't be happier that he's seen fit to join our club as the CEO.

"He's exactly what this club needs at the top as we endeavour to make North Melbourne as successful off the field as we are on it."

Arocca is the second Collingwood executive lured to another club in recent times. Greg Swann swapped the chief executive's chair at the Pies for the same position at Carlton on the eve of the 2007 season and Arocca was thought to be disappointed at the Magpies' decision to pass him over, appointing Gary Pert to the position – more

n The Brisbane Lions have become the centre of attention again. Pre-season figures show 18,094 members have signed on, up from 16,048 at this time last year. Brisbane's peak came in their third premiership year when there were 30,914 members in 2004 – Courier Mail

n So strong is the demand following their premiership success, Geelong may be forced to limit membership. The Cats who have budgeted for 34,000 members in 2008 are tracking 20 per cent better than 12 months ago, raising the question if Kardinia Park will provide a seat for all ticket holders.

Geelong will play eight home games this year where capacity is 27,000 (22,000 seats and 5000 standing room). The completion of a $38 million redevelopment by 2010 will increase capacity at Kardinia Park to 30,000 – Herald Sun

l Geelong's Steve Johnson booked at 128 km/h
Geelong footballer Steve Johnson has again put in his career into question after the premiership player's car was impounded under Victorian hoon laws when he was caught speeding on Wednesday night at more than twice the legal limit.

Ben Schneiders reports in The Age that the Cats confirmed he was booked by police at 128 km/h in a 50 km/h zone and faces the loss of his licence for 12 months.

It is not the first time Johnson has run into trouble. He was suspended by Geelong for the first five games of last season after being arrested in the off-season for drunkenness.

It was his second offence in less than 18 months and there was speculation at the time he could be sacked by the Cats.

But he turned his career around after swearing off alcohol and was a key player in Geelong's first premiership for 44 years, winning the Norm Smith Medal in the grand final win over Port Adelaide.

Geelong chief executive Brian Cook said the latest incident, did not involve alcohol. Johnson was travelling with teammate Shannon Byrnes to a golf course in East Geelong.

"Steve's actions were dangerous and unacceptable and could have resulted in tragic circumstances," Mr Cook said in a statement.

"Ultimately every individual is responsible for their actions and the consequences of those actions. Our players understand that society holds them to a high standard."

He said the possibility of penalties would be discussed in the next week with Geelong's leadership group, but would not speculate on what might happen to Johnson.

l David Neitz to lead Demons for ninth season
Melbourne veteran David Neitz, holder of the games record (301, 1993-2007) goals record (628) and number of matches captained (154) has been named to lead his club for a ninth consecutive season.

Cameron Bruce, James McDonald, Russell Robertson, Brad Miller and Brock McLean will continue in the club’s leadership group, while veteran Adem Yze has been recalled at the expense of Brad Green.

l Trevor Sprigg dies suddenly
Former East Fremantle footballer and WA State Liberal MP for the seat of Murdoch, Trevor Sprigg, died at Fremantle hospital on Thursday afternoon aged 62.

Sprigg was a popular sporting figure in WA, playing 152 league games for the WAFL Sharks and then going to be a prominent sportscaster on ABC TV and radio. He also captain-coached TFL club Glenorchy in 92 games over five seasons (1971-75) and 10 matches for Tasmania.

Sprigg returned to Perth overnight from a holiday on the Gold Coast to attend the Liberal leadership spill in Perth on Thursday.

n Melbourne forward Russell Robertson (205 games, 1997-2007) will take part in a new Channel 7 singing series "It takes two" starting soon – he's been involved in music for several years, playing in bands ...

n Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews would like to see the NAB Cup trial rule that a kick has to travel 20 metres before a mark is paid introduced for the regular season. Extending the distance a kick must travel before a mark is paid is being trialled again and Matthews believes the rule is definitely worth introducing into the premiership season.

He believes marks from kicks of less than 20 metres are cheap possessions and extending the distance would create more pressure. "It wouldn't worry me if the ball had to travel 25 metres or 30 metres before a mark was paid," he said.
"To have to kick a ball 20 metres to get a free possession is no big deal, people can handpass that distance. This makes maintaining possession just a little harder." – Courier-Mail

Meddling again where it isn't needed
Can't keep their hands off our game, can they?

Latest frustration is "mother meddling" with interchange rules for the NAB-Wizard-Ansett-Panasonic-Fosters-Escort-Amco-Golden Fleece-Country Women's Association Cup.

It's getting beyond a joke and it's about time the do-gooders zip their lips up and let the blokes have a go at playing a decent game of footy, without trying to remember what set of rules they're playing under.

Blow the whistle, bounce the ball and let's get on with the bloody game that no one cares about until the premiership season starts the real stuff on March 20th.

They said it ...
NAB Cup interchange caps will strip stars away
The AFL's leading clubs have warned the league's new capped interchange rule will dramatically strip star power from next month's NAB Cup.

Victorian power clubs Collingwood, Hawthorn and Essendon said yesterday the rule would make it impossible to give veterans and stars limited minutes in the pre-season competition.

Instead they will be forced to wait for the NAB Challenge, where interchange is unlimited, to ease in their best players.

Sydney coach Paul Roos attacked the trial rule and said as many as five Swans stars would now be ruled out of the club's clash against Hawthorn in Launceston on February 17.

Many clubs give players with limited preparations short bursts of action in the NAB Cup, but the new cap of 16 interchanges a quarter makes it hard to tailor game time.

A host of stars and players returning from surgery were expected to be given graduated game time during the cup.

They include Chris Judd, Anthony Rocca, Peter Everitt, Scott Lucas, Shane Crawford, Robert Harvey and Justin Koschitzke.

Clubs will not be able to circumvent the new guidelines by making mass player swaps between quarters. Those interchanges count in the next quarter's tally.

On Tuesday the Western Bulldogs asked for extra player swaps for their clash against the Kangaroos in humid Darwin, but the AFL has knocked back the request.

Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh said clubs' plans for Round 1 would be interrupted.

"And to include the times that blokes are exchanged during breaks as one of the interchanges for the next quarter is ludicrous," he said.

Players' association vice-president Brett Burton said veterans could retire prematurely if the rule was brought in for the home-and-away season – more

Sports identities mourn the death
of commentator Clinton Grybas
Herald Sun, reported by Karen Collier, Matthew Schulz and Glenn Mitchell:

Radio personalities, high-profile footballers and prominent Melbourne identities have thronged to the Tuesday funeral of sports commentator Clinton Grybas.

More than 1000 mourners turned out for the service including Essendon spearhead Matthew Lloyd, fellow commentators Bruce McAvaney and Tim Lane, former footy stars Wayne Carey, Garry Lyon, Jason Dunstall, Tony Shaw and Rohan Smith, businessman Ron Walker, 3AW chief Graham Mott, colleagues Rex Hunt, Gerard Healy, Dwayne Russell and Robert Walls, coaches Rodney Eade and Terry Wallace, player manager Ricky Nixon, and AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick.

Emotional colleagues and family members fondly remembered the extraordinary life of the boy from Warrandyte who mimicked Richie Benaud and Harry Beitzel as a child, lived his dream to become one of the nation's finest broadcasters, and touched all walks of life with his warmth and kindness.

His brother Ashley choked back tears as he paid tribute.

“Now he’s called his last game and the final siren’s sounded," he said, struggling to keep going.

"Clint, you’ve now got the best seat in the house to all the sporting events that you’ll ever hope to see. We will always love you Clint and we’ll always miss you.

"We love you mate. Rest in peace."

Mystery still surrounds the death of Grybas, aged 32. He was found next to his bed in his Southbank apartment 10 days ago.

His trembling girlfriend, Laurenna Toulmin, was inconsolable at the end of the service as she tenderly reached out to touch the coffin smothered in white roses.

Earlier, she bravely stood before the congregation, recalling their fairytale romance and how they told each other they loved each other every single day. Her last words to her soulmate were the same.

"I’m just so grateful to have had him in my life. And I’m so grateful that his last words to me ... were 'I love you'. And I'm so grateful mine too were "I love you','' she said.

"We said I love you all day every day... I am proud to say we were the sickeningly perfect couple."

Fellow commentator Rex Hunt broke down as he credited Grybas for helping to save his career, when he doubted he had the strength to go on.

“When the rest of the world wanted to condemn me, your beautiful boy stood by me,” he said to Grybas’ mother.

He said a friendship with Grybas had “no fine print”, and described an enthusiastic, passionate and "outstanding young man" who had put “the spring in the step" of the 3AW team.

"There are some very big shoes to fill in the broadcasting box and they will take some filling, make no mistake.

“I wonder what might have been, and hope that one day that I won’t feel so bad as I do today.”

FoxSports football co-host Gerard Healy said the loss of Grybas was a major blow to Australia’s sporting culture.

He said he had left an indelible mark and had raised the commentating bar "to a level that at times staggered his peers".

"The words of Clinton were a powerful force that more often than not turned a B-grade match into an A-grade viewing spectacle ... It was simply his great gift," Healy said.

"I’ll miss doing up your tie, but most of all I’ll miss raising my hands in the box in silence to applaud your genius with words”.

Vanessa Amorosi's tribute song Shine rang out among the mourners.

The Melbourne-born singer relived the hit which topped the Australian charts and highlighted her as a star when she performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney Olympics.

The song was Grybas' favourite and he was also fond of Amorosi as a performer.

Mike Brady sang another Grybas favourite, Aussie rules anthem Up There Cazaly.

A video produced by Foxtel featured a host of tributes from the sporting industry.

Among them included one of his first bosses, Peter Booth, who remembered Grybas' glee at being offered a gig on Friday night football on the ABC.

Former basketball champ Michele Timms said Grybas had been a great friend to her sport.

And 3AW's, Graeme Bond, said Grybas had called the soccer, tennis, AFL, athletics, boxing, and at the 2000 Olympics water polo with astonishing talent.

Seven Network commentator Bruce McAvaney said Grybas was “just a wonderful role model”, and a thorough professional who always ensured he prepared meticulously.

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said Grybas had earned the respect of his industry and the public through the “sheer brilliance” of his calls.

And Collingwood Football Club president Eddie McGuire said simply: “Sport won’t be as good as it would have been without Clinton around to describe it."

Brother Ashley remembered a young brother prone to pranking, playing at commentator - being Richie Benaud in the lounge room.

“He loved his work and he loved the lifestyle, he often said he would do it for free.”

Among the most poignant moments of the service was the playing of a voice recording of Grybas as a child, practising as a commentator as the video screen showed his methodically produced columns of footy scores and player and commentator names.

Ashley said his brother kissed their mum, Sandra, at every greeting and farewell without fail.

“Tragically he kissed her for the last time on New Year’s Day, on a great family day.”

Elton John's Candle in the Wind was playing as mourners entered the CityLife Church in Wantirna South from 11am.

Three large screens inside the church showed Grybas beaming and holding earphones above a stage adorned with white lilies before clips of Grybas' appearances on TV and radio were played.

Compere and veteran broadcaster Tony Charlton said the family had planned a small funeral for just 200 in Warrandyte, but had been overwhelmed by the response from teachers, sponsors, taxi drivers, the “whole gamut”, Mr Charlton said.

He said it was still a mystery why he had died suddenly 10 days ago. There has been speculation he may have died while sleepwalking.

“Tests are still being conducted by the coroner. No clues have so far been determined.

“What do you say to a stricken mother so proud of her son, and a father who watched their son with quiet satisfaction, and how do you console a partner who says that he will be forever a part of her?”

Ms Toulmin, a traffic reporter who lingered around the 3AW office in the early days of their romance, told the service of their incredible bond and of her partner's limitless potential and caring for others.

"Clinton always made my achievements seem so much more important than his own," she said.

"He could have been anything."

She said he did not seem to stop commentating, even about her cooking and her driving.

She believed his greatest call of all was when "the mighty Cats won the grand final".

He had planned to ask her to marry him and had even asked a mate how he should pop the question, quipping that he was always doing his research.

"Of course I would have said yes, by the way.

"He loved kids and would have been a great father. He was really just a big kid himself."

Pallbearers carried out the coffin to a recording of Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman's Time to say Goodbye.

Two vignettes which appeared on the AFL website –

Peter Booth, ABC Radio
As soon as I listened to his (Clinton's) audition tape I decided there and then I was going to put him on Friday night football. … I can still picture in my mind him in the lounge area with a cup of coffee. He had no idea of what I was about to say.

‘Clinton, I’ve heard your tape, and you’ve got a gig on Friday night football on radio’. The look on his face was just incredible. He almost went numb. He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Then the smile broke out. That was a very definitive moment in his life.

He crammed into 10 years what most broadcasters would cram into in 40 to 45 years of their working life.

Bruce McAvaney, veteran sports commentator and host
He was the prototype of the new caller. If I was 15 years of age, as I once was, wanting to be a broadcaster. You would look at Clinton Grybas and say that’s the guy that I want to call like and that’s the way I want to go about my business. He was a wonderful role-model.

Trial rules for the NAB Cup
League experiments with limit on interchange

Aiming to eventually reduce the number of collision injuries, the AFL has moved to cap the number of interchanges allowed for each team during this year’s NAB Cup competition giving each side a maximum of 16 interchanges per quarter and 64 per match.

The league will use the trial over the 15-match series to identify whether a restriction on the number of interchanges can work given that the rise in average number of interchanges has led to congestion around stoppages.

Jon Ralph noted in the Herald Sun: A team breaking the rule will be penalised with a goalsquare shot at goal and be forced to play with 17 players for the rest of the quarter.

Players forced off under the blood rule will be seen as an interchange rotation, while players taken off on a stretcher in the last quarter will also be counted to prevent roting.

The number of players on the interchange during this year’s NAB Cup will also increase from six to eight.
__________

In further NAB Cup rule shuffles, a 2.5m x 6m ‘no-go zone’ will be present in the middle of the ground, forbidding players to position themselves in that zone while the umpire is preparing to bounce, in the act of bouncing or exiting via his usual exit path from the stoppage.

A free kick will be given if a player enters the zone during any of the listed situations.
