l Carlton's Jarrad Waite suffers facial injuries
Carlton key position player Jarrad Waite was the victim of a New Year's Eve assault in Lorne in which he suffered minor facial injuries.

The AFL club reported that Waite, 24, and his girlfriend "were assaulted with bottles" by four suspects early Tuesday morning.

Victoria Police spokesman Senior Constable Wayne Wilson said four people were taken into custody at Lorne after Waite was assaulted. They have since been interviewed and released pending further inquiries.

Carlton chief executive Greg Swann said Waite was an innocent victim of the attack but his status as an AFL footballer played no part in the incident and the facial injuries would not affect Waite's pre-season training – Yahoo! Sport

Overhaul to reaction of off-field incidents
The AFL wants to dramatically tighten its code of conduct and overhaul how the competition deals with off-field incidents.

The League sent out on Friday (28th) a  discussion paper to the 16 member clubs and the AFL Players' Association on a proposed personal conduct policy.

A key feature of the discussion paper is to change or expand the definition of conduct unbecoming to have a "major focus" on incidents which break the law.

"The policy has been developed after consultation with AFL clubs and players and is based on a very simple concept – that every person involved in the AFL is in a privileged positions," said League chief executive Andrew Demetriou.

Teamwork goes for goal: peace

Waleed Aly, a Melbourne lawyer, university lecturer and Muslim community leader, believes no other sport unifies like Australian football.

"Australian football is the closest thing this country has ever had to the Declaration of Independence," Mr Aly says. "The whole premise of it was that it's our game … to play it is almost automatically to be one of us, in a way that can't be said of other sports."

"Everyone said, 'It's too big, it's too difficult, you won't get the money,' " Ms Oziel, who put a formal proposal to the AFL and the Peres Centre in Israel, said.

But when the billionaire Richard Pratt kick-started the fund-raising with $60,000 from the Pratt Foundation this month, the project won the official go-ahead. A further $240,000 is needed to bring the team to Australia.

The Peres Centre was established in 1996 by the president of Israel and Nobel Peace laureate Shimon Peres. With a philosophy that people build peace, not governments, it brings together Israelis and Palestinians in areas such as sport, education, medicine and business.

The centre's "Twinned Peace Sport Schools" program, running since 2002, will be the Peace Team's starting point. More than 1600 children from disadvantaged communities in Israel and the Palestinian territories, aged six to 13, come together once a month to play soccer or basketball.

The games are not Israeli versus Palestinian, but mixed teams in which students quickly learn to support each other.

"It's so amazing to see how the kids overcome their differences," says Roni Kresner, a former Sydneysider who works for the Peres Centre in Tel Aviv. "At the first meeting, they might be a bit stand-offish. By the third meeting, they are hugging each other."

Information sessions will be held within weeks to encourage graduates of the schools program to play in the Peace Team. A handful of expat Australians with knowledge of AFL have volunteered to coach, and the AFL will send over equipment, coaching manuals and DVDs of the game.

Brisbane's Travis Johnstone will
cost Melbourne $200,000 next season
Melbourne will continue to pay former midfielder and 1997 No. 1 draft pick Travis Johnstone $200,000 next year, despite the 27-year-old being traded to the Brisbane Lions in October.

Karen Lyon reports in The Age: The payment is revealed in the club's financial report and is the source of some dispute between the club and its auditors, Ernst and Young.

The Demons had announced a profit of $96,689 for 2007, but the auditors believe the payment to the player, who is never named in the report, should be taken into account this year causing the club to in fact make a loss.

In the report, the auditors representative writes: "The football department costs disclosed in the income statement should reflect an additional $200,000 expense. Accordingly, the trade and other payables balance should be increased by this amount. The impact on this adjustment would be to reduce the result of the year ended 31 October 2007 by $200,000 and increase trade and other payables, and the net asset deficiency by this amount."

The Demons have now recorded profits for the past four years, but this year's smaller profit was put down to its poor season and the long line of injuries which impacted player payments and affected gate takings.

l Sydney on revenue lift profit by $1.531 million
Sydney announced on Friday a net profit of $1,531,990.

The Swans reported revenue at the AFL club grew 9 per cent this year to $33 million with most of the increase being re-invested in football in order to remain competitive on the field.

"Whilst the result was extremely pleasing, the club continues to encounter impediments unique to the Sydney market that challenge our long term profitability," said chairman Richard Colless in announcing the profit.

"Accordingly we continue to investigate ways of broadening our revenue base and reducing our reliance on on-field performance."

Colless also announced that Melbourne-based director Rob Pascoe had been re-elected unopposed to the Sydney Swans Limited board of directors – Yahoo! Sport

l Telstra goes full distance at Docklands until 2010
The Herald Sun reported Telstra will continue its naming rights deal at Docklands stadium until March 2010.

Australia's communications giant confirmed it would honour a 10-year deal, despite cutting short a lucrative naming rights sponsorship at Sydney's Olympic stadium at Homebush (Diary, Dec 13).

Under a new US-dominated management team, Telstra is moving to reduce its heavy financial support of Australian sport.

l Hawks keep pressure on Clarkson
Hawthorn's Alastair Clarkson will enter the 2008 season having failed to win a coaching extension, making him the only AFL coach out of contract next year.

Jon Ralph in the Herald Sun reports the Hawks' breakout year – in which they finished fifth before winning a remarkable elimination final against Adelaide – has not been enough to convince the club's board to sign him long term.

While Collingwood has recently moved to give coach Mick Malthouse a secret one-year extension, Clarkson could be under pressure should Hawthorn falter early.

Cool response to AFL's Gold Coast plans
The Queensland Government has snubbed AFL supremo Andrew Demetriou, casting further doubt on the league's hopes of securing significant state funding for its Gold Coast vision.

Demetriou was in Brisbane last week but could not get a meeting with Sports Minister Judy Spence, who had Cabinet commitments.

The AFL's plans to establish a 17th team on the Gold Coast by 2010 hinge on a stadium deal being struck and an upgrade of Carrara Stadium, and it now appears the league will need to find private backers.

A Courier-Mail search has revealed a Queensland Government policy came into effect in 2006 which prohibits the revenue from poker machine taxes being spent on sporting stadiums.

The levy on gaming machines, which contributed to upgrades of the Gabba and Suncorp Stadium, and the construction of Robina Stadium, is now directed into the state's health services.

It is understood Demetriou travelled to Brisbane early last week in a bid to meet the minister but Cabinet was sitting and he was only granted time with ministerial staffers.

Gold Coast market isn't ready for AFL push
The AFL's decision to push ahead with a Gold Coast-based team without first securing a stadium deal is "dangerous", says Michael Searle, the managing director of the Titans rugby league side.

The AFL plans to establish a 17th franchise on the Gold Coast from 2010 after the Kangaroos rejected a multi-million-dollar offer to relocate to Carrara.

But Searle believes the Gold Coast market isn't mature enough to support an AFL side in two years' time and fears if the franchise collapsed, it would cause severe damage to the burgeoning region's reputation as a sustainable base for national sporting teams.

Carrara Stadium needs a massive injection of funds to bring facilities up to scratch but the AFL is yet to secure funding for the ambitious project.

Searle said he would prefer to see a Gold Coast AFL club flourish rather than perish like the Brisbane Bears did in the 1990s when the region had the unwanted tag of being the place where sporting teams went to die.

"I think the biggest threat to us is a team coming here and collapsing," he said.

"It damages our brand as much as it does the national sports brand because it affects sponsorship across the board and consumer optimism goes out the window.

"I'm happy for national teams to come here provided they're competitive, well structured and they're here for the long-term."

By 2010, the Gold Coast is likely to boast five national franchises – the Titans (rugby league), Blaze (basketball), Galaxy (soccer) and an AFL club.

Searle said it was a "genuine concern" that the market was being saturated.

"You can't just plonk a team here and put a Gold Coast logo on it and expect it to happen."

AAP REPORT, The Age, December 21, 2007

l Fremantle's record profit of $1.539 million
Despite a disappointing on-field performance in 2007, Fremantle has announced a record operating profit of $1.539 million to go with their record-breaking membership tally of 43,343 last season.

The club has recovered well financially since posting a loss of more than $2.5 million in 2001, posting $1 million-plus profits since the 2004 season.

Chief executive Cameron Schwab said on Thursday that the overall result was as a result of consistent hard work.

“We have a fantastic team of people at Fremantle who work tremendously hard to ensure that our club is the very best it can be,” Schwab said.

“Every member of staff deserves plaudits for the great work they have done to deliver another outstanding operating result.”
