Master plan for Carrara unveiled
Demetriou presses for $200 million upgrade
Stadium expected to be ready in 2012

Following a visit to Brisbane by AFL chief Andrew Demetriou earlier this week where he is understood to have private discussions, a master plan for a $200 million upgrade of Carrara on the Gold Coast was unveiled on Wednesday.

Robert Craddock reported in Fox Sports that Demetriou explained how the new ground would be modelled on Geelong's small but impressive Skilled Stadium at Kardinia Park with a capacity of between 20,000-22,000.

But the catch is it will almost certainly not be ready until 2012, two years after the side's likely entrance, which would mean the club would play some of its top-billing home games at the Gabba in its first one or two seasons.

"There is a master plan we have developed which involves taking that stadium to 20,000-22,000 seats, a boutique stadium along the lines of the Skilled Stadium model," he said.

"A club playing out of there with a clean stadium as far as advertising went and generating income from signage and gates would reap about $400,000-$500,000 net per home game.

"That is our choice. It requires between $150m-$200m. We are working through with various parties as to how we will get it built.

"I am pretty comfortable with where we are at that there will be a redeveloped stadium probably for 2012 onwards. We would not go down this track and do all this work if we were not comfortable with where we were at. It will be like York Park in Tasmania where you can get a great atmosphere with 20,000 people.

"What we would do is play smaller games at Carrara and the larger attended games at the Gabba perhaps for one season. It still may be for a derby against a team like Brisbane we still may play in Brisbane for the crowds."

Branding backtrack as Kangaroos name stays
North Melbourne will continue to be the Kangaroos throughout next year, new chairman James Brayshaw said yesterday.

Speaking outside North Melbourne Town Hall less than a week after the club rejected a move to Gold Coast in favour of fighting to survive under its traditional name in its traditional home, Brayshaw more or less acknowledged that symbolism had its limits.

Branding issues, and the fact that all the paperwork and merchandising for season 2008 was already done, meant there would be an unacceptable cost in reverting to the North Melbourne name immediately, Brayshaw said.

"It'd cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to change that and I think it'd be futile anyway, but certainly from a naming point of view we're the North Melbourne Football Club and I couldn't be happier," he said.

Telstra passes Homebush baton to ANZ Bank
Telstra has prematurely terminated its expensive naming rights sponsorship of Sydney's Olympic stadium.

As foreshadowed in The Australian yesterday the move is part of the telco's plan to scale back on sporting sponsorships.

Telstra's loss is the ANZ Bank's gain; it's paying $31.5 million over the next seven years for naming rights.

The telecommunications giant, traditionally the biggest sponsor of Australian sport, committed to deals worth as much as $60 million for up to 10 years for the naming rights to the Homebush stadium, as well as Melbourne's Docklands ground in 2001. Telstra is expected to keep its naming rights to the Melbourne Dome for now, despite moves inside the company to also dump that property.

The move is part of a push – headed by US import
Bill Obermeier – to rationalise the number of sponsorships the company holds.

The Australian understands the rationalisation push has been on since shortly after American chief executive
Sol Trujillo arrived in July 2005.

"Telstra has been trying to get out of both stadium deals for about 18 months," a source said yesterday.

l NAB Cup games revised
With North deciding to remain in Melbourne, the AFL on Wednesday altered two first round matches in the forthcoming NAB Cup series.

The Kangaroos were scheduled to play Brisbane at Carrara on February 16, but now Essendon will take on the Lions with North to play the Western Bulldogs in Darwin.

The NAB Cup draw is detailed in the sidebar.

l Pagan back at Arden Street as football director
New Kangaroo president elect James Brayshaw revealed the club's new nine-man board on Wednesday at the North Melbourne Town Hall with dual Kanga coach Denis Pagan its new football director, Will Houghton QC, ASG group chief executive Geoff Lewis and KPMG's Carl Dilena as the new faces on a board described as 'unified'.

Brayshaw added that although he was surprised with Rick Aylett's decision to resign as the club's chief executive on Tuesday night, he had no ill-feeling about Aylett's fears for the club after the Kangaroos knocked back the AFL's Gold Coast relocation offer.

It was noted that recently retired Shinboner of the Century Glenn Archer was not named in the nine-man group.

l Adelaide post $2.2 million profit
Adelaide has recorded a profit of more than $2.2 million for the football year ending October 31st.

The Crows say increased broadcast rights payments of $1.2m were a major factor in the $2.212m operating surplus.

l Door open for return by Cousins to WAFL
The West Australian Football Commission says former West Coast Eagles captain Ben Cousins can play in the WAFL next season, if he can provide medical proof that he has overcome his drug addiction.

ABC Sport Online reported on Wednesday that Cousins was banned from playing in the AFL for 12 months in November after being found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.

The Commission met Tuesday night and confirmed Cousins has not been suspended from the WAFL.

Commission chief executive Wayne Bradshaw said that it was sensible to impose conditions on Cousins' possible return.

"We believe that it's in the best interests of the competition and in due consideration to where Ben's at, that he should be given the opportunity to come back, once he's shown he's overcome these issues at the moment," he said.

Lions want impact assessment on second club
The Brisbane Lions have asked the AFL to provide an impact assessment on what a second AFL club in southeast Queensland would have on their revenue.

Lions chief executive
Michael Bowers said the AFL had an excellent track record with big-ticket decisions and his club did not fear a second team based on the Gold Coast.

"But we do need to know all the detail on what exactly an additional club in this area will mean to all the existing clubs and what impact it might have on our club," Bowers said.

"The AFL has told us they have carried out research and assessed potential impact and have agreed to pass on that information to us.

"As yet we haven't received that document. Once we do ... we can start planning and addressing what areas we might need to work on."

It is generally accepted the Lions attract close to 10 per cent of their crowds for bigger drawing games at the Gabba from the Gold Coast region.

A second team in south-east Queensland would have a significant initial impact on their membership, corporate sales and crowds.

n Richmond has announced the appointment of Jeff Bond to the club in the newly formed role of General Manager – Learning and Development.

Footygoss reports Bond’s history includes working as a psychologist for Pat Cash during his Wimbledon triumph in 1987 and serving as the Head of Sports Psychology at the Australian Institute of Sport, where he worked closely with the Australian swimming, equestrian and rowing teams.

n Simon Goodwin will captain Adelaide next year, replacing long-time skipper Mark Ricciuto, who has retired. Goodwin, 30, yesterday said it was an honour to be named the fifth captain of the Crows since the club's AFL inception in 1991. He follows in the footsteps of Chris McDermott (1991-94), Tony McGuinness (1991-96), Mark Bickley (1995-2000) and Ricciuto (1999-2007).

Along with the appointment of Goodwin, the Crows announced a new six-man leadership group comprising of Nathan Bassett, Brett Burton, Tyson Edwards, Ben Rutten and Nathan van Berlo.

n Collingwood is now aligned with the newly formed Victorian netball team – the Melbourne Vixens, which will have access to the facilities at the Lexus Centre and put the Magpies well in touch to attract the interest of Melbourne's 110,000 registered women who play netball.

l Rick Aylett resigns suddenly from Kanga CEO post
Less than a week after the Kangaroos' board decided against a move to the Gold Coast, Rick Aylett announced his surprise resignation as CEO on Tuesday – he cited personal reasons for leaving the post after 12 months.

The AFL webpage reports Aylett resigned, saying he had not been given enough input into the club's business strategy.

Aylett reflected proudly on the fact the Roos posted a modest profit this year despite the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future.

“I am proud that, in the most tumultuous year in the club’s history, through the efforts of management and staff we have been able to record a profit for the 2007 season and equally as proud of the performance of our football administration and playing group in finishing third in the AFL competition,” Aylett said.

He also paid tribute to coach Dean Laidley and the rest of the Roos’ staff.
__________

A fortnight later, Scot Palmer in the Sunday Herald Sun (Dec 23) revealed that Aylett served three-months notice and would remain as CEO until a new man is appointed.

AFL rip Kangaroos out of Carrara
The Kangaroos have expressed disappointment in the AFL's decision to remove them from the Gold Coast during the pre-season competition and community camps – a lightning response to the club's decision to spurn the league's relocation proposal.

Jake Niall and Caroline Wilson report in The Age: Less than five days after the club rejected a Gold Coast future, the AFL yesterday informed the Kangaroos that it intended to shift their February community camp from the Gold Coast to Bairnsdale and that they would not be playing Brisbane at Carrara in the NAB Cup.

While the AFL is yet to finalise details, the AFL has suggested that another team will play the Lions at Carrara in the NAB Cup and has floated the prospect of the embattled Kangaroos playing the Bulldogs in Darwin instead.

As the AFL acts swiftly to push the club away from south-east Queensland, it also appears certain that the league will let North Melbourne play only three games – instead of the requested four – at Carrara next year and that it will not play any games at all on the Gold Coast in 2009. This means the club will lose the additional $400,000 it would have received for that "extra" fourth game next year and will be deprived of a guaranteed $1.6 million in 2009 –

l Bulldogs get Welsh; David Gourdis is No.1 rookie
Scott Welsh was the biggest name to move when the seven selections were taken yesterday at the Pre-Season draft conducted in Melbourne. The former Kangaroo and Adelaide player was drafted by the Western Bulldogs.

At 29, Welsh, who kicked 49 goals for the Crows this year has played a total of 129 AFL games and kicked 300 career goals.

After Richmond picked up Subiaco forward David Gourdis with the No. 1 selection in the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft, the Tigers repeated the WA-connection with their first choice in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft by recruiting ex-Fremantle player Clayton Collard.

Collard, who played just one game for the Dockers in his debut season, had been training at Punt Road for much of the off-season and the Tigers did not overlook the clever small man when it came to the crunch.

The 19-year-old, originally from South Fremantle, played 17 WAFL games in 2007 and kicked 26 goals.

Other notable selections in the draft saw Brisbane claim back key tall Pat Garner, Calib Mourish and Ryley Dunn return to the Dockers, Andrew McQualter earn another chance at St Kilda and Port Adelaide take back Ryan Willits.

Meanwhile, the AFL careers of Ashley Sampi and Guy Richards seem over after both were ignored at the draft tables.

Daryl Timms noted in the Herald Sun that on sheer numbers, yesterday's drafts produced more selections than last month's AFL national draft.

A total of 68 players were selected in the national draft compared to eight in the pre-season draft and 62 in the rookie draft.

There were 56 selections in the inaugural pre-season draft in 1989.

Yesterday's drafts finalised all club's playing lists for next season.

l New deal opens windows and doors for St Kilda
St Kilda has signed a three-year contract believed to be among the most lucrative sponsorship deals in the AFL with international window and door manufacturer Jeld-Wen.

Martin Boulton reports in The Age: The deal replaces the club's naming-rights partnership with telecommunications company Vodafone, which did not renew its contract at the end of this season.

Jeld-Wen also has global business interests in real estate, resorts and marketing and three years ago acquired Australian company Corinthian Doors, which will sponsor the Saints' coaches.

Club president Greg Westaway said the deal with a global company was among the "key changes" he forecast when his Footy First ticket challenged the former Rod Butterss-led board.

l Demetriou defends drug policy
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has defended the league's drug policy during a speech to a group of health professionals at the State Library of Victoria.

ABC Sport Online reports: The AFL has been criticised for its three strikes illicit drugs policy with other sporting codes, such as the NRL, implementing a zero-tolerance approach.

The AFL Commission will discuss the sport's drugs policy next Monday and will consider a number of submissions, including from AFL clubs.

But Mr Demetriou says the AFL remains the only sporting organisation to voluntarily release illicit drug results.

"It has not been great for PR but it has forced many people, football followers and others to discuss the issue of illicit drugs," he said.

"Much of that discussion has focused on the number of strikes rather than the policy as a whole and rarely has that discussion included figures about illicit drug use in the wider community."

l Tassie to revive the State Premiership
Tasmanians will recapture some old-time excitement when the State Premiership is revived next year. The State grand final will be played in Hobart on September 20 or 21, after the Southern Football League (SFL) and Northern Tasmanian Football League (NTFL) have decided their flag winners.

Martin Agatyn reported in Tuesday's Burnie Advocate that State grand finals were played from 1909 to 1978, with the most famous, or infamous, being the 1967 clash between Wynyard and North Hobart, in which a goal post was removed by the crowd when Wynyard was in front at the end of the match, which was declared a "no game."

Discussions continue on the plan to re-introduce a Statewide competition involving the NTFL, SFL and NTFA in 2009.

One of the great unfathomable decisions
NSW footy give Craig Davis the flick
If something happened in New South Wales football in the past 20 years you would be certain its success was achieved with the inspiration of Craig Davis.

In one of the great unfathomable decisions by those appointed to organise our code, Craig's been told he will not be there after December 21st – only a few days short of two decades of service.

Craig has been there for everyone and has been everywhere in Sydney and NSW during his time at the pointy end – if it was broken, Craig would fix it; if it was to be held, Craig would organise it; if it was to be started, Craig would finish it.

Craig has friendships that will endure over the length and breadth of the NSW community of Australian football. His achievements will live long to replace the empty recall of today.

As Craig at 53 takes a breather before starting another chapter of life – what a shame it is to recognise there are times when footy sucks – this is one of them.

Kevin Taylor
__________

The website of the Black Diamond AFL carries this tribute from Ian Granland –

A person well know in local football circles, Craig Davis, has fallen foul of the dreaded 'restructuring' word at the AFL (NSW-ACT).

Craig, who has worked for the football league for a period only days away from 20 years, has held a number of positions in the organisation and stuck with them when times were tough.

He was also a player of some note and played for four VFL clubs in his career starting with Carlton as a youngster after being recruited from Tasmania.

Injury put paid to a most promising career only to see him pop up under Ron Barassi's guidance at North Melbourne where he played in 1977-78 then transfer to Collingwood the next year where he went on to play 102 games for the Pies.

He came to Sydney in 1986 as assistant coach to Tom Hafey with the Sydney Swans in the Geoffrey Edelstein days. The next year he began his employment with the NSW AFL first as Development Manager, then CEO, later as umpires co-ordinator and lately as Business Development Manager.

Yes, as they say, he had more starts than Tulloch.

In 1988 and well into his thirties Davis pulled the boots on for the Swans wearing that famous jumper number 60 where he played 9 games and booted 17 goals.

Almost an icon in the Sydney football offices and sometimes known as Mr Everywhere, Davis never knocked back an invitation to visit a club, league, educational institution, business group, charity or non-profit organisation in an effort to push the code and take the message to as many people as possible. He became very involved in youth education later in his career.

Craig Davis has been a wonderful servant for NSW football and his capacity to achieve together with his enthusiasm ranks up there with the best.

He visited clubs in this league many times over the past 20 years and on several occasions organised a football prize or so which was used for their fundraising.

Those who make decisions like the termination of Davis's employment do so as they see it in the best interests of their business but sometimes the contribution people like him have made to the game over the years – and its our game, he is one of us, can be overlooked.

Good luck Craig.

Sydney chairman makes it plain
No new Sydney team before 2015
Population remains "significantly disinterested"
The AFL would be unwise to introduce a second Sydney-based AFL team before 2015, according to the Swans' chairman, Richard Colless.

And a 16-side competition, rather than the 18-club model the AFL is suddenly spruiking, is the more preferable set-up in the mind of Sydney's coach,
Paul Roos.

Samantha Lane details in The Age: League chief Andrew Demetriou has said that the AFL, in light of North Melbourne's abrupt rejection last week of a $100 million package to relocate interstate, would endeavour to establish teams "in parallel" on the Gold Coast and in western Sydney.

However, Colless says NSW's population remains a "significantly disinterested marketplace" in terms of what, to it, is a non-traditional football code.

"I think it would be unbelievably ambitious to be contemplating a team much before 2015," Colless, chairman of the Swans since 1994 and former head of AFL NSW, said last night.

"It's not just getting a competitive team together and the right administration in place, it's actually convincing a significantly disinterested marketplace as to why they should be supporting AFL and why they should be supporting West Sydney –

AFL moves on with expansion of 17th club
North-Kangaroos snare return of Denis Pagan
AFL looks to 18th licence for western Sydney

Two-time premiership coach Denis Pagan will return to the Kangaroos as a board member at the defiant club in the wake of their rejection of the AFL's Gold Coast proposal.

Pagan led the `Roos to the 1996 and `99 flags before joining Carlton as coach in 2003.

The Blues sacked him from the post earlier this year and James Brayshaw enticed him back to Arden St a day after becoming the new club chairman.

"He said `let me have a think about it' and then once the stay in Melbourne bid (succeeded), I rang him again today and said `look Denis, you're a big part of my plans, what do you think?'," Brayshaw told Channel Nine.

"He said `I'd love to be a part of it', so that's great."

There has been speculation that Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting and club legend Glenn Archer might also join the board.

Brayshaw's recruitment of Pagan followed the decision for the Kangaroos to reject the AFL's Gold Coast relocation package.

The board then unanimously voted Brayshaw as chairman.

While Brayshaw was putting together his board at Arden St, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou also continued to talk up the league's expansion plans.

The AFL will press ahead with plans to set up a 17th licence on the Gold Coast and Demetriou also repeated the desire to have a second team in Sydney.

He said the league was serious about a possible 18th licence for western Sydney, flagged when the AFL went public last year with long-term strategies.

Asked if the formation of a 17th licence could pave the way for another new team, Demetriou said: "absolutely, our view is that western Sydney provides us with fantastic opportunities as well and we've shared that vision with the clubs recently.

"We're not afraid of having an 18-team competition."

Also, disappointed Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke has been caustic describing as a "cop-out" the club's decision to reject relocation due to the AFL's failure to secure a stadium deal.

"The AFL are a very good business organisation. If they say they'll get a ground for you, they'll get a ground for you," said Clarke.

"That was a straight cop-out. The AFL guaranteed (a ground) and the AFL have got the resources to make sure that happens."

While clearly disappointed that the club spurned the booming city, Clarke has asked Gold Coast AFL fans to keep the welcome mat out for the Kangaroos, who are contracted to play four premiership games at Carrara next year – Yahoo Sport

l Pre-season draft will be over in minutes
Former Collingwood defender Jason Cloke could be the shock selection of Tuesday's pre-season draft.

Sportal notes the AFL confirmed on Friday that just seven clubs are eligible to participate in this year's draft and the only club that will have more than one selection will be Essendon.

The Bombers, under new coach Matthew Knights, have selections five and eight giving the club the scope to choose a youngster and an experienced player if they wish.

Cloke, who turns 26 in May, spent last season with the Bombers' VFL affiliate Bendigo where he finished runner-up in the best and fairest under the coaching of Knights. He also starred for the VFL in its victory over the WAFL in an interstate match in May.

The 189cm defender – whose brother Cameron was picked up by Carlton with the last pick in last year's pre-season draft – played 76 games in five seasons for the Magpies from 2002-06 where he was a member of the Pies' 2003 losing grand final side after missing the previous year's premiership decider due to suspension.

Cloke recently signed a two year contract to play with Williamstown – now the affiliate club of the Western Bulldogs – in the VFL but only on the condition he does not get a second chance in the AFL via next Tuesday's draft.

As has been the case for several years next week's draft will be over in a matter of minutes with only Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, Melbourne, Richmond, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs taking part.

Adelaide, the Brisbane Lions, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, the Kangaroos, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Sydney have each already submitted full playing lists to the AFL for next season.

l Surgery for Peter Everitt; Betts has appendicitis
Veteran Sydney ruckman Peter Everitt had arthroscopic surgery to remove cartilage from his right knee on Thursday after suffering some pain behind the kneecap. The Swans have shown no signs for concern and expect Everitt to re-join pre-season work after the Christmas break in readiness for the 2008 season.

Carlton forward Eddie Betts was admitted to Epworth Hospital on Friday suffering from appendicitis.

The Western Bulldogs confirmed that midfielder Daniel Giansiracusa has suffered a knee injury during a pre-season training session. The injury is suspected as minor but the 25-year-old will undergo an MRI scan to evaluate the extent of the injury.

AFL $100 million Gold Coast offer rejected
Kangaroos vow to stay Victorian-based
Club to be renamed back to North Melbourne

The Kangaroos have rejected the AFL’s $100 million offer to relocate to the Gold Coast and have vowed to remain a Victorian-based club.

The board made the announcement on Thursday after it was told by the AFL it would not give it a 12-month moratorium to consider the proposed relocation to the Gold Coast.

In an eventful day for the Roos, the board made three resolutions:

n For the club to stay in Melbourne,
n To appoint media personality James Brayshaw as its new chairman, and
n To have a spill of the board.

Chairman-elect Brayshaw is leading the campaign to keep the Kangaroos based in Melbourne and is confident the club can turn around its dire financial position. However he warned club fans that the fight to ensure the club's survival has only started and will be difficult.

He also vowed to change the club's official name from The Kangaroos back to North Melbourne, their former title.

Brayshaw said the lack of a confirmed stadium deal was a key reason why the club rejected the AFL's proposal. "Quite frankly, I don't know how they expected us to agree to a relocation without our home being fully-funded and ready to go," he said.

The announcement of the resolutions came moments before the Kangaroos were due to begin a members information session at Dallas Brooks Hall in East Melbourne where around 2500 club members attended.

Arguably the most dramatic day in the club's history opened with the AFL telling the Kangaroos it had rejected their request for 12 months' grace so they could consider the Gold Coast scheme.

The board then met in the afternoon and voted to reject the Gold Coast proposal.

It also unanimously endorsed Brayshaw, co-host of Channel Nine's The Footy Show, as the new chairman and also voted for a spill of the board.

ABC News Online reported that earlier in the day League chief executive Andrew Demetriou confirmed the AFL will offer another entity the chance to be located at the Gold Coast.

The AFL believes that to advance the code – and in the interests of the wider game – that the push into the Gold Coast cannot be put on hold for another 12 months.

Both Collingwood and St Kilda have already expressed interest in playing games on the Gold Coast.

They said it ...
AFL misses the Gold rush
Australian football has missed the boat in its quest to establish an AFL team on the Gold Coast, with any such venture bound to play second fiddle to the Titans.

That's the confident opinion of NRL chief executive David Gallop, who says the Titans and rugby league have already made an indelible impression on the Gold Coast community.

Speaking on the Gold Coast yesterday (November 15) at the launch of a scholarship program for Titans-contracted players to study at Griffith University, Gallop said rugby league had trumped its rival code in the blossoming metropolis.

"We definitely made the right decision for our game (by establishing the Titans)," he said. "We did it at the right time. The commitment from the Gold Coast to build a stadium was critical in that.

"But as important as their on-field success has been, it's been their community work that has really set them up for the future."

Gallop said the arrival of a second professional football team would stretch the Coast's resources – which is why the Titans were placed perfectly to muscle a rival code out of the market.
